Basic safety we were taught in tracked vehicle recovery with a cable. The tank driver is buttoned up with the hatch closed, same with the M-88 recovery vehicle operator. All others outside stand at least the cable's length away.

This is a good part of why I put the winch on my truck. I use the winch hooked to a strap wrapped around whatever on the vehicle, with an old blanket tied around the cable. Haven't had an issue yet.

We used cables to pull 50 ton tanks out of rice paddies in Vietnam. Everyone knew to keep a safe distance and the driver stayed down in the pit as one would occasionally break. Each tank carried a cable.

It's beyond my why ANYONE uses a chain to pull someone or something. I can't count how many times I've pulled up to help someone in need to find someone else already hooked up to them with a chain ready to pull them out. It's typical for me to walk up and promptly unhook the chain then throw it towards the recovery vehicle while asking them to put it back in the truck where they found it.

Go buy a good strap guys guys. There are many that have ratings meeting or exceeding most chains. Straps are also easier to store and handle.

Common sense has to prevail at some point in time or Darwin wins.

How are most of you hooking up the straps. Mine has loops on each end making it a pain to attach.
