Never tow with a chain..

use a towel as well
When you use a strap to pull a stuck vehicle it is also a good practice to throw a towel over the middle of the strap.
The added wind resistance helps dissipate the force if an end let's go.
Been pulling out stuck vehicles while out 4x for MANY years.

Looks like something stupid that someone would do in the oil patch.
When straps break they will give you warning. Chains just break. Been towed off a few leases myself.

years ago we got a combine stuck in a ditch. borrowed a good 50 ft cable to pull it out. the cable had a big (6 inch) chain link like loop on the ends. the loop on the combine end broke and sent 50 ft of cable at me, through the back window of the tractor, then the front, then smacked a monster dent in the hood. it somehow took out a side window on the way too, missed my head by 6 inches and left the side of my face peppered with glass... and they say cable is safer than chain...

Why do we all use "safety chains" when towing stuff? Maybe chains aren't the best? Or are safety chains there to make us feel better about it, knowing they will likely fail if the trailer somehow becomes un-hitched?

That's a little different since the trailer is on wheels and offers little resistance protecting the chains from stretching to a breaking point. Granted the nose of the trailer grinding against the road would provide some serious resistance.
