Default max tow vs tow package

I did a side by side comparison with my 2009 supercrew with towing package and shortbox. I have built in brake controller, heavy duty shocks and class 4 hitch with 7 prong and 4 prong. 5.4, 6 sp. auto. The dealer I got the truck at has a 2009 super cab with longer box and max tow. My tranny cooler is the same as is radiator, same bumper attached to hitch and 4 springs with same width and thickness. The tow max has the towing mirrors. What is the difference between these two. Thanks.

Check the weight ratings. They may have stiffer springs too.

Probably just the mirrors. Most often the factor/dealership tow package includes a reciever hitch(which is rated for much more than the bumper) and the wireing harnes to connect to the trailer being towed which will allow it to accomidate the max tow capacity. As Dereku said, check the rating as springs do play a role as well, and so does the gear in your rear end.

I don't know about 2009, but for 2012 both have the class IV receiver, 7-pin plug, upgraded radiator, auxiliary tranny cooler, and SelectShift tranny. The Max tow pkg adds 500 pounds GVWR (which means 500 pounds more payload capacity for hitch weight), the telescoping tow mirrors, and the trailer brake controller (ITBS). The ITBS is optional on trucks without the max tow pkg, but the only way to get factory tow mirrors is as part of the max tow pkg.

The regular tow pkg is available with any engine and axle ratio, but Max Tow requires EcoBoost engine and 3.73 axle ratio

I think you can get a 6.2 with the max tow as well. Also, the receiver hitch is slightly different with the max tow and ( depending on which wheelbase you choose) the max tow gets you the thicker frame.

Not for the 2013 model, per the order guide. There are three different grades of fanciness for the max tow pkg, and all three require the EcoBoost engine.

However, the F-150 Trailer Towing Selector page in the 2012 Towing Guide indicates that Max Tow was available for 2012 F-150 with 6.2L engine for models other than Raptor or Harley-Davidson. GCWR was the same for 6.2L engines with the Max Tow pkg as for EcoBoost engines with Max Tow pkg.
