I think Ford should have 2 sets of tow ratings. The normal one would stay the same but then there should be a new category called the "sometimes you do what you gotta do". The new category would bump up the GVWR by 2000lbs. The rGAWR would be unlimited if the tires are overpressurized. The GCVWR bumps to 27,500 provided the combination is not operated at night(headlight aiming) and the vehicle is not within a half mile following distance of another vehicle(in case the trailer brakes don't work).

We just returned from the first long-ish trip of the year with our travel trailer, and I'm again impressed by the EB as well. Nothing like the OP's load, but 600 miles through Utah mountains always provides a nice workout. Love how the EB performs with a trailer.

Funny all the complaining ... I guess I'm also in the 'do what you gotta do' camp. He isn't bragging about doing 75 mph passing big rigs in a heavy crosswind or anything! Would I regularly overload my truck? No, not at all. But from time to time there are occasions where you need to get something done. With proper care and precaution, you can get it done. I've been towing regularly since I was 14 hauling a flatbed w/ a wagon trailer full of corn to the farmer's market on Saturdays. With some experience, you can pretty well tell if things are going ok.

I know my tires are rated for 51 cold pressure max, but damn smokey, that's a beastly load. I'm glad to hear you loaded intelligently and safely, and especially that everything went fine. Now imagine if you have the 3.73 gears!

Problem was he was on public roads...doing around 65mph (as he stated) thru "some" hill country for about 300 and was at least 5,000 pounds overweight. Yep, no problem this time for sheer luck. Not even going to go thru any scenarios to illustrate the err...

I mean I can understand being up to 10% (maybe about 1200# max) over one weight rating for a short pull...but 5K? Just not smart in my book. Just my opinion..It is almost an example of "What Not To Do" with your 1/2 Ton Truck.

What's also impressive is the fact that OP had 3:15's and pulled that much weight.

Just the backhoe weighed 13,200. Trailer axles with backhoe loaded weighed 19,040, plus 2,420 hitch weight for total trailer weight of 21,460. Plus another 6,040 for the wet and loaded F-150 = 27,500 GCW.

The empty unloaded 40' gooseneck dually equipment trailer weighed 8,260. The empty trailer by itself was enough weight to overload the F-150. That's why I tied to rent a lighter-duty trailer, but there were none for rent in my neck of the desert. So like any old farmer, I "made do" with what I had available.

Stories like this are why I choose to buy new over used.

This whole thread is a perfect example of the "Do as I say, not as I do" mentality.

I bet my truck with its "puny" 4.6 V8 could pull 30000# a mile or two on smooth level asphalt at 20 mph, but I'm not going to come on here bragging about it.
