Can you explain the benefits of adjusting the gain on the controller? How does that affect the towing experience?
If you don't have that adapter in your new to you truck, you can get one at Ford, or online or from any place that sells trailers. If you don't have the 7 pin plug, you can buy the plug and wiring harness that has both plugs. There's a factory connector about the spare tire, it plugs into

Sorry I misread your post. I thought you said you used the adapter in the glovebox plug in your pepboys controller. If your reusing it, you're ready to go

It should be noted that for trucks that didn't come with a tow package (Looking at YOU, 'STX'!) the 7-way connector may not be not true plug and play. If the truck doesn't have the proper connector that the 7-way plugs into, you have two options-

Purchase a new wire harness from Ford for ~$150 or simply use wire taps and two 18" sections of heavy wire for the needed circuits.

The only other splicing I had to do on my '07 was at the rear when adding the 7-way plug because my truck did not come with a tow package. However, I only needed to add about 1.5 feet of wire for two circuits. Easy peasy.
You can certainly add an aftermarket brake controller with no programming needed or applicable. If you add the Ford OEM TBC, you will need to have it flashed at the dealer for the truck to recognize and use the controller. It is. Ore expensive then an aftermarket controller, but the functionality and system integration is worth much more than the added cost in my opinion.
