Max towing 04 Ford f-150
I couldn't find it on edmunds and the google searches confused me.
If geared right, what is the max. towing on a Ford f150 04-08 with the Triton 5.4 ?
Also which gears are recommended ?

Here is the '04 towing guide. BUT, you can usually forget about the "towing". The FIRST consideration is the "hauling". Find the PAYLOAD cargo carrying capacity listed on the yellow tire loading sticker on the edge of the driver's door. THAT will be your limiting capacity.

Did the 04 models have the yellow payload stickers?
Thought they were first mandated around 06 or so?
But, yeah, payload is what you want to know.
If it's not on your doorjamb, you should find a sticker with the truck's GVWR somewhere. Then take it to the scales and get it's current weight. The difference is current payload and is what you have to play with for trailer tongue weight, people and cargo in the truck.
Good luck

All I know is that you can't tow a 13,000 lbs backhoe
