Default Max RV Towing for 2016 F150?

Hello -

I'm looking into purchasing a 2016 F-150 and purchase a travel trailer.

2016 F-150 XLT 4x4 / 3.5 EB / 3.55 Rear / Tow Package / 157" WB / SuperCrew

If I were to purchase this truck, what would be my max limitations (length, weight?) I'd like to get something around 30' or so with maybe a slide out (family of 4), hopefully around 9,000 max GTWR

The spec sheet shows 10,600 lbs (11,600 with max tow package) - but is that really realistic?

I can't custom order 2016s anymore and the 0% ends soon so I'm limited to what is on the lots and this was the only one I could find within 4 dealers that has this combination. No one has the max tow package under 50k.

I attached the sticker - thanks for any insight.

With that weight trailer and family in the truck you will run out of truck payload most likely. I would suggest max trailer tow package and a HD option IF you could find one. A 8000 pound trailer would have a tongue weight of 1040 pounds (13% of trailer weight). My truck (similar to you) has a 1782 payload. So for example take 1782 - 1040 leaves you 742 pounds for you family and the stuff you put into the truck or accessories you add on.
Personally I would only go to a 26 foot trailer which really is 30 feet in length. I would also go to E load tires and have the best WDH you can buy. Some will disagree but I have towed for a very long time and want to error on the side of safety.

I am very new here as well, but I have done a bit of research on this, even wrote a calculator in excel. It looks like someone has a truck similar to the one you want:

ShinyPete: Year=2015, Trim=XLT, Drive=4x4, Cab=SCREW, Bed=6.5', Engine=3.5 EB, Axle=3.55, GWVR=7050#, Payload=1907# ,Tow=10,700#, Options=302A, MaxTow, XLT Sport

It has a max payload of 1907 and towing of 10,700. The experts here say you might have about 13-15% of the hitch on a travel trailer. If your camper puts 13% of its weight on the hitch, then you will max your payload out at 600bs of people, excluding gear in the tow vehicle. It gets worst if you do 15% weight on hitch. Go with a lighter trailer, I see lots of nice close to 30' trailers for 7000.

Edit: Looked at wrong part of calculator

Yeah, you really need Max Tow and/or Heavy Duty Payload Package (HDPP)

But that could be a tough combination to find on a lot. Try to find a Max Tow at least and check the door sticker for payload.

If it's at all feasible, can you stand a SuperCab? or even a regular cab and the family take a separate vehicle? My SuperCab XLT has a Payload of 2112# and only the regular Tow package, No ITBC...yet

From what I have seen only a couple of people on this forum have the Heavy Duty Payload Package, which is different than the Max Tow. I couldn't find any around me.

yes, the Max tow and HDPP are different. And are quite rare on the lot.

Thanks for the responses - this is very new to me...

What about something like this? UVW is 6,690 with a hitch weight of 830 - would this give a little more room for comfort? I can't find any with either of those packages unless I jump to the 250 mark which is a little above my price point.

I guess I need to do some research with towing because all those calculations are foreign to me!

Would this kind of tongue weight pull down the bed far with a WDH?

That would be a lot better, how much does your family weigh and how much in gear would you have in the tow vehicle?

I posted my tow calculator here: https://www.f150forum.com/f82/towing-calculator-356611/

Edit: Actually that is unloaded weight, you want the fully loaded weight, which should be about 8230 looking at the link you gave me. That is the max weight of the trailer fully loaded. It is better to be conservative if you can.

Just an observation but do they now only come with a 23 gal fuel tank?? That is going to suck when towing.
