Low tow rating on 2001 with 5 speed
I know this is an old truck but I'm looking for a little historical data. I just purchased a 2001 F150 4.6liter supercab 4wd 5speed. I was stunned when I read in the owners manual that this particular model with 3:31 gears is only rated to tow 1600 pounds.
After some research it seems that it is related to either the clutch or the 5 speed transmission. A similar truck with an automatic can haul 5600 pounds.
So, the question: Is the manual really that fragile or is Ford just concerned that some people don't know how to drive a manual transmission?
I won't be towing often but occasionally I'll be hauling 3-4000 pounds.
This truck seems to handle a trailer fairly well. I just hauled 3500 pounds; 2000 pounds of hay on a trailer that weighs 1500 pounds. No issues, plenty of power.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks.

My 2cents - its both. The clutches are smaller and less stout as they were decades ago. The drive train and chassis will not take the load shock as well either when pulling a heavy load off the line.
