What 5th wheel has a 600 pin weight? The only one I can think of is the scamp.

I am trying to pay cash for the truck or get as close as possible while still having the cash needed to buy the small 5th.
The LOADED pin weight, plus your family/passengers, stuff you carry in the truck are all part of the payload. Any way to get the real numbers on that fiver? Internet lookup?

I have emailed several sellers, but have not heard anything back yet. A 2002 KZ Sport 22.5 would be under 860 dry, I would figure. I can only find info for newer, bigger models (25 feet) and it has a dry pin weight of 860. These are small trailers. I see people towing huge 5th wheels and travel trailers with their new 1/2 tonnes. I guess they are all over weight? Again, Canada is just not litigious and we seem to be less stickly about regulations. People do not sue. I remember a couple we came across on their honeymoon towing a 14-16 foot (can't remember exactly) eggshell camper with their late 90s honda civic. They went through the damn Rockies!

It also seems that we do not take into account the weight of the cargo in the vehicle in the same way. My Sante Fe will tow 3500 lbs regardless of what I have inside with me. My Toyota Yaris is rated to tow 700 lbs and I have towed a my old fishing boat that was about 600 lbs without issue for a few 700 km trips. My buddy tows his snowmobile with his yaris and it comes in about 1000 lbs with the trailer. People just seem to "do it" in Canada.

Yes, the higher cost of vehicles in Canada makes folks try to get more out of what they have. You can't discount what you have in the vehicle though as it all contributes to the gross combined weight. I already mentioned that I am 500 lbs over my gross rear axle limit so I am not the weight police, but I also don't carry anything in the bed of the truck because of that and try to load heavy items to the rear of the trailer.

Yes you are right. You can tow with a yaris or civic or even a Santa Fe . It does wonders on the over all life of the vehicle and transmisson.

People have responded to my inquiries and the dry weights are all 4200lbs with 800 lbs dry pin weight. I would certainly be able to get away with certain configurations, but the heavy duty payload package would give me room to take firewood or anything else I might want to transport in the bed.

Hi again, been a while.

We bought a 2014 XLT, 5.0 v8,crew cab, 4x4 with the Heavy Duty Payload package. I had to order the truck as it just didn't exist outside of Alberta oil country. Also got skid plates, running boards and vynal floors. I bought it on February 28th and I will stil he waiting a while to get it. Hope it's here by May.

Anyway, I won't be buying a 5th wheel this year unless something comes up that is just too good to pass on. I'll still be looking at ~22.5 foot 5ths up to 25 feet max. I'd really like it to have bunks

I am still calculating the same weights of (at the high end) of 8000 lbs for the boat and 5th loaded. I don't care about pin weight any more as I got the HD package.

This summer, it will still be tent camping. I wonder if it is worth using tow/haul mode when just towing my ~1600 lbs boat?

Also, if I get the truck in May, I am going to have trouble putting on 1500 kms to meet the manuals requirement for breaking in before towing. That number might be a bit less than 1500 lbs. Not quite sure. Think it would be really bad to go camping with it before it is "broken in" and tow my boat? I would do the first oil change before we went and put in castrol Edge full synthetic.

Congrats, i think you got the perfect truck for your needs. with 3.73 gears, I would not even bother with tow/haul on such an easy load. You have the ability to pull a good size 5th wheel with that setup. Pics now!

Unfortunately, I am still a few weeks away from having it as it has to be built and delivered...

Nice truck, well done.

The tow/haul mode, according to FORD literature, ".....is for towing or hauling heavy loads" and 4 tons is heavy, so use it. Anyone pulling this kind of weight who does not use the tow/haul mode deserves to melt a transmission. It may not melt today, it may not melt tomorrow or next week but 5 years from now you will be crying the blues over some truly bad advice and a slipping transmission. Use it, use it, use it.
