You have 3.73 gears (all FX4s have them), which means if you don't have maxtow (giant tow mirrors) this is your tow rating.

3.5L EcoBoost V6 3.55/3.73 - - - - - - - - 9700lbs

Your truck will be fine with that trailer.

I am absolutely sure I have the 3.55 gears in my fx4. It is getting line-x tonight so can't confirm. I do appreciate the feedback though..it does help knowing I could pull off that trailer.

This is not the case with this transmission and its probably why you are having so many issues.
I was driving around town today and experiemented with 3rd gear. Unbelievable. It is virtually impossible to start from a stop (even with no trailer) when 3rd gear is selected. It required shifting to "D" to get going. What kind of automatic transmission design is that? I've been driving this truck for 45,000 miles and never encountered this feature. I've never tried the "tapping the brakes" feature to downshift. All of this is in the Tow/Haul mode of course.

Give me my old manual transmission with clutch. At least then I know what the fudge is going on with my truck! Now I have no way of knowing what the truck is doing unless I read the 700 page owner's manual (4 years later). That is not on my reading agenda.

It is good that this information can be found on the F-150 forum. I feel kind of dumb. The dealer never told me how to drive my truck! I signed the papers, they gave me the keys and "pushed" me out the door. I thought that reading the 700 page owner's manual was optional, like how to take care of cleaning the paint finish and rotate the tires.

When I bought my travel trailer, the dealer gave me a 2 hour "tutorial" on how to work all the features.

I am thankful to y'all for explaining the heavy trailer towing driving techniques with the 2010 F-150 5.4L with 6-speed automatic. I will make good use of that info on my next travel trailer road trip.

Yea I didn't realize the 3rd gear thing either til I read it on this forum. Its very helpful. I don't get why they made it that way, very strange. Good luck on your next trip, it should go much better!

It is crazy! I actually read all of my manual because this was my first vehicle with an automatic tranny. I had a jeep wrangler for 11 years and didn't have power anything.

The brake tap in tow haul works like a charm, it's like downshifting a manual, just tap and drop a gear then accelerate as needed. Saves a ton of wear and tear.

If you do more than "just a little tap of the brakes", does it still downshift?

Time for me to go out and experiment.

I hope I don't end up like this unfortunate fellow.

Don't you just hate it when the truck downshifts on its own?
Maybe you just want to tap the brakes to activate the trailer brakes without downshifting.

Just to clarify..
2013 FX4 can have 3.55:1. I just learned of this last week, here on this forum.
Max Tow can be had with small mirrors. I learned this in Oct 2011 when I bought my Max Tow F-150.
7200 lb payload restricts tow capability significantly, unless:
You scoff at the law and public safety or you are pulling a wagon.

Be safe out there

Towing More Than One Vehicle

Cars, passenger vans and SUVs are not permitted to tow more than one trailer or one vehicle. Motor homes, trucks, pickup trucks and truck campers are legally permitted to tow two trailers or a trailer and a motor vehicle behind a trailer. However, a three vehicle combination that is swaying excessively, is unstable or has reduced handling capabilities is subject to action by the police as an unsafe combination of vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act.

The maximum length of any combination of vehicles is 23 m (75' 6").

Hey guys

New to the forum and not sure when I'll get pics as we are parked for the summer lakeside.

Just an FYI for travelers, Canada does not have an MTO. MTO would be Ontario only so over provincial rules may differ.

And yes I just went through every page, took three days

No, it's a deliberate tap of the brakes. If you steadily apply brakes then there is no downshift.
