I see from your profile you have a 2011 F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost. That will blow the doors off my 5.4L V-8

My truck is as described in my signature line. I think the Ford spec. says 6,000 pounds empty. Figure another 500 pounds for me plus full tank of gas plus tool box. Travel Trailer dry weight is 4,600 pounds. Add another 500 pounds for water, propane, battery and stuff you need for camping in a travel trailer.

I figure the whole rig, ready for the road weighs about 11,100 pounds.

Maybe I need an EcoBoost.

I have 2012 F150 Platinum Ecoboost 3.73 with Max Tow hauling a 30' Foot KZ MXT Toyhauler. Just finished up a 4800 mile trip from NC out to Utah area and back. I ran regular gas and only got 8.3 mpg. Ran Speed limit+ most of the time. Cat scales had our trailer at 7,000 pounds loaded up. We did have a lot of wind.
Check your owners manual. Premium gas is recommended for towing and will improve your fuel mileage while towing. These engines were designed to benefit from premium, but tuned to allow for 87 octane. I use 87 in the winter, but never less than 89 in the summer so I can top off with 93 prior to towing and get around 91.

You really don't need a ecoboost! Did you use premium gas (91 octane) ? To tow with the ecoboost you do. I have the 5.0 2013 crew cab heavy duty payload and it tows great. It mostly has to do with the new transmissions. I tow 8k lbs regularly here in the northeast and never have any real problems except by WhiteFace mountain NY on some hills going up to the omplyic village area.
Your truck just has the old transmissions, my old 1997 regular cab lariat would struggle too with the older trans.

Nope his has the 6 spd tranny as its an 09 and up.

I have a 2010 lariat with the 5.4, max t/t package. My trailer weighs @ 7000 lbs and have to say I'm happy with the way it performs. I run the tranny in tow/haul mode as per the owners manual and I've done a couple of long hauls @8-10 hrs with no concerns...

My 2010 5.4 with 3.55 gears pulls mine great, and just my trailer is probably 2000 lighter than your whole setup, lol! You should have no problems unless you have an older 5.4 or a 3.15 gear ratio or something with that light of a trailer. My 08 sport trac with a 4.0L would've pulled that great! What's your rear end ratio and year of truck? The 5.4 is a great pulling motor with a great torque curve. Won't win any drag races though. I'm using app I can't see signatures.

I believe you have pinpointed the problem. The transmission shifting is erratic at best. In cruise control at 60 mph, it is constantly shifting gears on the flat and level (no headwind). When I downshift to "3" for 45 mph speed limits through towns, etc. , if I stop at a light and try to start in "3", it won't go. I have to shift to "D". IMHO that is just dumb computer control of the transmission.

Maybe the engine has the power, but the computer controlled transmission doesn't put the power to the rear wheels.

Give me back my old stick shift with a clutch! That way I know what the engine is doing.
