From what you are describing your truck has the towing package. Just not MAX tow.

If that is the case then I believe you should already have the transmission cooler from the factory.

The only trucks without the transmission coolers are the ones with no towing package at all. Show us your window sticker if you can.

OP - as mentioned before - look under your bumper for the hitch rating. This is will likely superceed your payload rating in regards to tongue weight.

For example:

My Payload = 1,865 however my hitch is only rated at 1,210.

1,865 - 1,210 = 665lbs for people, hitch, gear, accessories, etc.

1,210 / 0.13 = 9,307 max trailer (assuming no more then 665 of cargo)

I can add more then 665 lbs of payload but then I have to lessen the tongue weight to compensate. I can't, however add more then 1,210 tongue weight if I'm carrying less then 665 lbs payload due to the WD hitch limitation.

Most max trailer weight guides estimate 10% tongue (hence why you see 12,100 max trailer weight next to my 1,210 max tongue rating) - 10% is really unrealistic for a travel trailer and why we usually estimate 13-14% - but each RV varies. Make sure you know yours before purchasing.

Here is my sticker as an example what to look for.

Read the disclaimer on the hitch [ Rating will vary depending on vehicle equipment] This is the hitch rating not the truck rating.

My point still stands that just because you have 1,700+ lbs of payload, it doesn't mean you can put 300 lbs in the truck and 1,400 on the tongue.

You can get many of the parts of a Tow Package without getting the Tow Pkg.

A XLT 301A for example comes with the hitch and camera for instance but not with HD Cooling (unless it's standard on that engine), Auxiliary Trans Cooler, Bigger Alternator or Stiffer Front Sway Bar.

You can also get the Hitch as a standalone option for $95 on lower line trucks like an XL or XLT 300A.

These trucks are limited to 5000 lb Max Towing by Ford.
Presumably the Aux Trans Cooler is the most critical missing part.

Really need to know for sure what the sticker says for installed options related to towing and payload. Otherwise we are all guessing to some degree. The Limited comes standard with the integrated brake controller which would include the 7-pin connector and wiring. However based on the 2017 configurator the tow package is an extra option. This is where the extra cooling and sway bar gets installed.

Well I am glad to say the new truck I bought has the trailer tow package where my last one did not, but it did pull my 6300# trailer very nicely with 3.15 gears. This new one has 3.55 gears, so it should pull it even better.

Going to miss my 14 though, such a good truck for the 20 months and 63K miles I had her for. Here's hoping the new one is as trouble free(though not starting out that way).

His Limited has the "medium duty towing". Class 4 hitch, 7 pin wiring, IBC, but no auxiliary transmission cooler and bigger front sway bar.

My truck has the same setup plus the backup assist with backup camera.

so if the truck has the med duty package w integrated brake controller, back up assist, receiver hitch, and smart connector, the only thing missing is the transmission cooler and the upgraded sway bar? Could the tranny cooler be added by the dealer if they wanted to sell you a truck? I'm knee deep in buying s lariat when I realized it almost everything related to towing except the "tow package". Might be deal breaker.
