Think we will be keeping it, for a while anyway. But besides the weight issues, a 4x2 pulling this heavy a trailer has issues when the rear end gets on soft ground.

And we do want to spend more time off-road in the far North when the wife retires, so a more heavy duty 4x4 will definitely happen before then.

TRUCK: 2012 Supercrew Lariat 4x4 Offroad Package with 3.73 E-Lock
Upgrades: 295/70/18 E-rated Nitto Terra Grapplers with 18x9 KMCs with different offset...Added Large Bushwacker Fender Flairs and RacePrep Upper Control Arm for fitment and wider track (about 4" total overall)
GVWR is 7200...Truck full of fuel with all the upgrades is 6000 which leaves me ~1200 OF PAYLOAD
As Configured rated to pull 9600#

TRAILER: 2015 Jayco White Hawk 29REKS ( http://www.jayco.com/products/travel...e-hawk/29reks/ )
Loaded for travel (water tanks empty while pulling) is 7200-7300. Total of truck and trailer loaded without Myself and Wife is 13,300.

With truck/trailer and occupants this puts me right on the edge of payload capacity (even tho it is rated to pull more). GVWR is what holds you back.

I am at ~7200 GVWR loaded with two occupants and tongue weight with WD Hitch. I also have a 5Star Livewire Tuner that shows true temps/boost/etc.

Moral of this post...the numbers that you can truly pull safely are muck lower than the published number in real life.

15,500 posted...~13,600 in reality
9600 Tow Rating...~7300 in reality

Truck and Trailer with WD Hitch set very level on the beach (4x4)

I have an '11 Lariat Supercrew 4x4. I ordered her with the 6.2, Max Tow and 3.73LS rear. Her GVWR is 7,700 lbs.. Her actual GCWR before added acc. is 1,611 lbs.. And her Tow rating is 11,100 lbs. When I ordered her I had planned on doing some traveling. So in March of '11 I purchased a new 29' Keystone Bullet Premiere travel trailer. Her full length was 33'6''. GVWR-7,600 lbs.. GCWR-1,620 lbs.. I added a few upgrades. I removed the pair of 20lb. propane tanks in favor of 30lb. tanks. I removed the single battery she came with and installed a pair of Interstate HD 6V Deep Cycle batteries. I then added retractable covers for the slide outs, a 2" hitch receiver to the rear bumper for a foldable cargo carrier. And did a few add ons to the interior. So, estimated weight of the trailer with both water tanks full, full propane tanks, the batteries, etc. put me at about 6,400-6,500 lbs., not counting gear. I had an Equal-I-zer sway control/weight dist. hitch on her. All being said, The truck towed her like a dream. Never lagged, studdered, and complained. But, alas, the following summer I had to sell the travel trailer due to back issues. It was just too tough for me to hitch her up.

I get a serious workout sometimes setting up my TT too. Then I see the class-a RV's roll into a campground, drop their automatic self-leveling hydraulic jacks with a push of a button, then commence drinking frosty beverages. 3hrs later I finally have a my junk setup. Definitely tempting to ditch the TV and TT and replace with a nice self powered RV.

^That's funny.....first time I pulled the 33' er Springdale TT into Payson Campgrounds in the AZ. I back her in, took like 3 trys to get her where I thought she was parked perfect. I'm the kind of guy who wants to get the rig unhooked ...and immediately start cranking, hooking up, sewer, cable, etc...(sweating a pinch!) I look over the site right next to us....here's this older gent with his recliner chair and cold beverage....watching me like a hawk!-lol. I love camping....you meet some of the nicest people on earth. I look over, sweat rolling down my face and ask him, well.... howed I do? He says....you look like you know what your doing, fine job.....LMAO
And he was sitting in front of one of those huge Bus RV's. I'll stick to the TT, for now.....although a 5th wheel is gonna happen!

To be able to get to the tow rating and combined weight rating, you have to have a light truck and just about perfect trailer setup. The 5.0 STX and similar package trucks have about the highest payloads of the non HD or stripped XL trucks. This has let me hit max tow and be ok on payload even with a GN trailer. With a half ton it's all in setting up the truck when you order or buy it to get a good payload configuration.

'12 Polaris Ranger HD

'13 Custom built 7x14 V-nose Homesteader Challenger

You know, the worst part? I never got to use it. After I bought it, my back really deteriated. If I had a hard time handling it in the driveway, there was no way I could of handled it on my own. I would of been solo on my trips. And I planned on a lot of Dry Camping. The only towing I did was when I brought her home. Then back to the dealer for some more add-ons, then back home again. I bought her out of state in Maryland. The dealer was about 90 miles away. Retail was around $32,000.00. Discounted to about $25,000.00, but I got a bit more off the price. All said with Tax, Tags, Reg., etc., and all the added accessories from the dealer and by me, I had about $28,000 or so in her. The following summer in July I sold her for $20,000.00. I could of held out for more, but I was offered cash money, so I took it. Yea..... I know. But the didn't seem that bad until I decided on getting one of these.....

I like that Homesteader! I just custom ordered an 8.5 Hercules and am waiting for it to be built. Do you like the trailer or were your forced to get rid of it as well?

Thanks. I still have it. I bought it after I ordered the Ranger. I decided to get an enclosed trailer to haul her around instead of an open trailer. Just thought it would be easier on the Ranger being enclosed. No Bug Juice, Tar, out of the weather, etc.. I bought them because I have property in Burlington, West Virginia. I mainly go out during hunting season, and a few times thru out the year. Sometimes I leave the Ranger out there for several months. So better security being locked in the trailer. I love the trailer. Only thing thou? Is I wish I had gotten at least an eight foot wide. A bit of squeeze when I need to put her in and take her out....
