Yeah, the EcoB, Tow/Haul, Cruise and that tranny work well for me too.
Never had any gear hunting.

Yep, T/H and cruise, transmission in "D" is the way to go for towing. The only issue is that mine is super hyper about downshifting to keep the speed spot on when going down hill. Sometimes I flick the cruise and/or t/h off when going down (if I don't want the grade braking, of course). Otherwise, I'm in cruise and t/h most of the time when towing my 6500# trailer. Tranny temps are usually right around 200*. Tows nice and easy ...

Finally got new weights on mine after some mods we made to the interior. Set up and ready with two horses aboard the pin will be no more than 1060 and the total weight will be 7400 or so pounds. I was able to confirm that my axle weights and payload are all still within spec. Have to say the STX 5.0 is a great package to pick if you can't get HD and still need good payload and towing.

I have a Ford F150 Lariat and I'm having a very hard time trying to figure out the tow weights! I'm pulling a bumper pull LQ horse trailer that is 5,300lbs empty, Approximately 6500 lbs full. The tag on the inside of my door says GVWR 7200 lb. The tag on the trailer says GVWR 10,000lb. I cant find any info on my towing capacity. Ive only pulled the trailer twice and going up hills I really had to press on the gas to get it to maintain speed. Any advice is greatly appreciate!

What is your vehicle's PAYLOAD? It is listed on your tire loading sticker on the door. You will likely run out of PAYLOAD before you reach your GCVWR.

GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) varies with your model year, cab style, wheelbase, engine and rear axle ratio. Find the towing data for your model year at the link below. Go to the page labeled "Trailer Towing Selector". Find your vehicle's GCVWR.

http://www.fleet.ford.com/towing-guides/

Then,
GCVWR - truck GVWR + Your truck's PAYLOAD = maximum weight of trailer and all cargo in the trailer and all cargo and passengers in the truck.

But again, most F150s will run out of PAYLOAD first. My rig is at 84% of GCVWR, but it is at 99% of rear GAWR.

Disclaimer I DO NOT ADVISE DOING THIS. I ended up testing out my truck this weekend. We had a show and traveled as usual with two horses aboard and inside the capacities of the truck on the way there. The trailer was about 7400lbs and pin about 1060 as normal. On the way home due to an emergency we had to haul about 1500lbs more and a guess of about 200 more on the pin. The truck handled it beautifully. There was no noticeable change in performance or increased sag. The 5.0 showed it can handle the weight very very well.

Here is the truck and trailer last weekend. It was loaded up and were ready to pull out. As you can see, this trailer keeps all the horse weight right on the trailer axles. We only usually use the rear two stalls, but they are a slant load so even using the front one most of the horse's body is over the tandems. This trailer works very well for our truck and it tows beautifully. I get a lot of comments about how well the truck handles it and how its set up, mostly from guys with similar trailers and 250s who are looking for new trucks.

^That's what I'm talking bout! Great truck....and horse trailersetup. Best thing Ford did was go to a variable cam 4 valve setup on all its truck motors.

One question I get a lot is what mods have I made. Other than the hitch it's bone stock. I could add air bags, but it does not sag bad, and is within rear gawr and payload specs so I have not. I might go to either load range c or e tires when the goodyears need replaced by next winter. I will probably get michelins. Next upgrade is a vinyl wrap of the trailer to match the truck. I might add some stripes to both. I tow throughout southern Ohio, KY and WV with this set up. The truck does drop to 4th on big hills but never loses much if any speed. The stx with high available payload works out great as a hard working but comfortable truck which is what all mine have to be.
