Hi, our December trip didn't happen until the middle of March. Just got home yesterday. We went 2,500 miles with no ill effects. Really loved that I can open my tailgate now. Towing felt no different than with the shorter shank. This was also a very windy trip; Truck and trailer handled fine, but the wind killed my gas mileage.

My original shank did not completely go through my receiver, but the new one does by about a 1/4". Next trip will most likely be in December.
Just noticed...it looks like your bar attachements on the trailer are pretty close to the end of the bars. Make sure you have enough to make your turns - you don't want a bar to pop off the edge!

Hi, I have my "L" brackets located at the maximum distance per Equal-I-zer; This allows for more flex of the square spring bars and maximum leverage. I tested the hitch and it is close, but my bars won't fall off.

Good deal, I'm glad you've checked it out. Safety first!

What does having a long hitch shank do while towing? I've always tried to have the shortest hitch/have the ball as close to the truck/hitch itself because I figured that was better. Just curious.

Hi, shorter shank or ball distance from tow vehicle is supposed to be ideal. I needed more distance so I could open my tailgate while hitched and have easier access to my bed mounted generator while traveling.
