My solution(?)
I have the same problem. 2017 supercrew with 6.5' bed, 30' trailer and 18' kayack and 15' canoe. Going full time RV so I have to take everything I own with me. What I've done is install a front hitch with a Thule goal post ,(this I used before) and Yakima roof rack. The rack will be here today. When I get everything installed, I'll send pictures. I have Retax cover to secure things in the bed. I thought this to be my best option.

Buy 4 Bullrings and install.
Lay a furniture pad / blanket on the tonneau.
Turn kayak upside down and lay on tonneau cover.
Strap securely to Bullrings.
Only issue may be that your kayak is too long. We did this with two kayaks that were not too long.

I don't know about cost effective, but I've had the Thule Xsporter for ten years and it's now on my 2016. When you consider it will last forever and transfer to newer trucks, the cost is easier to justify. I like that you can drop it below the roofline for less drag when you're not using it.

The trailer is pretty tongue heavy, it's right around 1200 pounds on the hitch....i don't put much in the bed and travel with just one of my kids (my wife pulls the boat) it's tight and maybe a bit over the payload, but not by much....since the tongue is so heavy I try to load as much as possible at the trailer axle and back...no matter how I load it I can't get anywhere near what the manufacturer states the tongue weight to be. I have the hitch setup where is pretty level and The ride is good.....the truck pulls like a beast....I used to pull the same trailer with a 2012 Ram 1500 and its a night and day difference with the Ford.

In this pic, my wife is driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee towing the boat and she has the roof rack with the bikes. The roof rack worked so well on the Jeep that we bought the same setup for my F-150 so one of us has the bikes and the other has the kayaks. It puts the things that are a bit tricky to haul on the roof and they are super stable.

Is that the Thule roof rack? I have been thinking about doing this but was concerned it would damage the roof clamping it on like that. Have you had any problems using this?
