Default Hauling a Horse Trailer

I am buying a new horse trailer. Total weight with horses will be about 6000 lbs. Probably less.

The trailer alone is 3200lbs, add 2,400lbs for the horses and some saddles etc.

The trailer will be 19 feet, 1 inch long.

Here is the info I have to see if it'll pull and STOP safely.

2003 Ford F150 4X4 XLT Triton V8.
Max tongue Load 500lb
Max Gross Trailer Weight 5000 lbs.
5.4L engine, is this saying I can pull and STOP within their guidelines?

5.4L engine, super cab 4x4 automatic
Rear Axle/tire size 3.73/40.6 16" tire
Mac GXWR-kg (lbs) 614 (13500)
Max Trailer Weight-kg (lbs) 3719 (8200)

Is that saying that I can haul and stop up to 8200 lbs?

My trailer ball hitch says Max Trailer weight 6000 lbs, Max tongue weight 600.

The bumper on my truck says: Max tongue weight 500 lbs and max gross trailer weight 5000 lbs. (hmmm, crap????)

Thanks.

the 8200lb max trailer weight is using a proper trailer hitch (class IV) and WDH. The 5000/500lb rating is for without WDH. But still, you're limited by the weakest link. from the sounds of it, it'll be your ball or tires. The load rating of the tire is more relevant than the wheel size.

you should have no trouble with that trailer. But running all the numbers is always a good idea.

Thank you. I can buy another ball hitch that will maximize the amount I can haul? To take care of that link? I also did a ton of research on tires and know exactly what you are talking about.

Is the rating you looking at on the hitch or the ball mount. If its the ball mount, you can upgrade. If its the frame mounted hitch that too can be upgraded but is more work. The biggest thing I can see is take care in set up of your trailer and pin weight, then make sure the electric brakes are working properly, make sure your brake contoller is adjusted and you should be good.

It's the attached bumper that will be the problem it seems. Rated up to 5000 lbs. And, since I"ve padded more weight than I will probably be pulling in reality, it would probably be ok. But, at the same time, when hauling two horses it'll be maxed out.

I think at this time Ol Red may have to be retired for plowing snow for us and I will be in the market for a 3/4 or full ton.

Either way, I'm happy to know that regardless, we need to swap out the trailer hitch/ball to a higher rated one.

Thanks.

I've found that there is always more being added to the load, either in the trailer tack room, the bed of the truck or in the back seat. People take less stuff for a two week camping trip than my wife loads for a two day horse show.
