Default Haul canoe on the roof? Or roof & tailgate?

Has any one hauled a canoe straight on the roof of their truck? Or maybe on the roof and on top of the tailgate? What's been your experience?

We've got a 15' canoe and a travel trailer. My truck is an S-Cab. Having the tt rules out a number of options for hauling the canoe. I don't have a rack and probably won't have time to build / buy one before we go, not to mention that most racks I've seen are rather expensive. We wouldn't use it that often since we generally haul it on our SUV for local stuff.

If you can not rig up something quick and simple like the one posted by Steve then you are best loading on the roof flat. When you tip it up from the tail gate to the roof you grab a lot of air and put a lot of stress on the ropes and the canoe itself.
