Gross Axle Weight Rating vs Max Wheel Rating
Originally posted in "2015 Ford F150" forum, thought I might get more response here.
I have searched the forums, but still cannot figure out how the rear Gross Axle Weight Rating on some F150s can be greater than twice the Maximum Wheel Capacity Load.
For example, I am looking at a SuperCrew 5.5 bed 2.7L 4x4 w/ Payload Pkg; the technical specifications states a rear GAWR of 3800 lbs, but the wheels it comes with (silver painted aluminum 17 x 7.5) are only rated at 1825 lbs each. I would calculate 3650 GAWR just based on wheels, ignoring axle rating and tires.
Heck, the highest rated Heavy Duty Payload Package wheels are only rated at 2101 lbs each, which would suggest a GAWR of 4202 LBS, and yet I see some GAWRs as high as 4800 lbs.
Am I missing something here that is obvious to everyone else?

You're not crazy. This has been bugging me for months.
I think somebody made a mistake, probably in the published figures for the wheels (or at least hopefully).
The HD Payload trucks with 18" alloy wheels do really have a rear GAWR of 4800#. There's an actual picture of a truck online with those numbers. Then how can the published wheel weight rating only be 2101# each?
Wish Ford would update the online figures or tell us what's going on.

My 2011 (see sig) has a 4800lb rear axle gross weight and each wheel has a 2400lb capacity. I hope it is some kind of a typo. I have read that Ford is somehow using 6 lugs for the 2015 HD Payload trucks. I would think this is a mistake because of the chance that a non-HD 6 lug wheel could be installed on a HD truck and thus fail.

Thanks Brulaz and Feathermerchant,
I notice that the 2015 wheel specs are very different from the 2014. If the wheels changed for 2015 model year but spec sheets were not revised, I could accept that it was a carry-over mistake. But it appears they have been deliberately de-rated for 2015. Attached smaller table is for 2015. No more 7 bolt wheels?

Like I said, a HD Payload truck was spotted with the 6 lug 18" HD Payload wheels (same as shown in the 2015 brochure), and the door sticker said 4800# rear GAWR. Think the payload was around 2500# for a 4x4 SCrew.
No idea what's going on ...
