It may not be illegal, but you can be held liable. Anything sticking beyond the bumper and some suit happy fool gets injured hitting it and off to court you go or at least your insurance company. And the insurance company is not concerned with wrong or right they are interested in minimizing cost. I know I got sued because the other party ran the red light and hit me. They sued and eventully the insurnace company settled for $6000. I take the hit on my insurance report because in the end it could cost them more if they did not win and it would cost them at couple of grand to take it to trial. And yes I had the green light, I was hit broad side between front and rear door. They had a red light and hit me, and sued me......... Massachusetts - NO Fault state - ya right.

I cannot give you specific states/provinces but we had this debate on a different forum and some contributors posted the specific laws and jurisdictions.

It's illegal in IL. Cop in Chicago lost his leg after hitting a receiver while chasing a "bad guy". I try to imagine hitting a hitch while sprinting. Ouch. Shattered whole lower leg. City sued truck owner, not sure what happened. Probably settled out of court.

It is not illegal in Illinois or anywhere else. Illinois does hold the distinction of being the only state I've ever found that had a bill introduced to make it illegal. But it has not ever been voted on and is not law. It was hb3669 and was adjoined sine die meaning it was not scheduled to be brought to vote the next session.

I'll continue believing these stories of tickets and losing lawsuits are internet legends until someone provides evidence. This has come up many times and not one has a single credible case of a ticket or lost lawsuit been found.

Unless your hitch sticks out too far from the bumper you are fine.

It is illegal, I don't post things that I haven't researched. The hitch DOES stick out from the bumper, that's what makes it illegal. The only way to be legal is to drop the tailgate (factory part of the truck) or put a red flag in your ball. The drop bar is NOT a factory part of the truck and therefore cannot extend past the perimeter of the vehicle.

If you researched it you would have a citation. I've seen lots of folks just like you make the claim. Nobody has ever provided evidence. I've looked extensively and found zero evidence for it to be a ticketable offense. Provide the evidence from your research and I'll happily concede.

You do not have to flag unless it sticks out too far. How far varies but is generally 6 inches and up to 4 feet, depending on state. Mine doesn't sick out that far.

I researched it 2 years ago when my buddy got a ticket. I didn't save the documentation. And people like you are not worth arguing with. I will not be ticketed because I don't leave my drop bar in my hitch. I cannot prove that murder is illegal, but I can assure you it is. I've seen the state and federal statutes.

I'm done here. And I'm sorry yours doesn't stick out as far. It's a common problem.

I'm not worth arguing with because I ask for evidence of a claim you made that is contrary to everything I've ever read on the subject? Right... I'm sorry I inconvenienced you for a citation. Hopefully one day someone will come along with support for your claim because obviously you don't have it either. I'll keep living on the edge until then in hopes I get a ticket so I can let everyone know.

I'd call that proof. Legal things generally are published in statutes as passed by governments. It isn't hard to find that law.
