First time towing, long trip... Any advice helps
Hey guys,
... I'm planing a motorcycle trip to north carolina/georgia/Tennessee from Miami, Florida 1,800 miles round trip. The trailer i'm using I believe is like 17' long and i'm guessing it weighs 2,500 pounds...
I will be loading the trailer with 6 motorcycles that weighs just under 400 pounds each, gear and luggage will be another 500 pounds. A 7th bike will be load up into the trucks bed 400 pounds.
So far:
Trailer dry weight: 2,500pounds
Trailer Cargo: 2900 pounds (6 bikes, gear)
Total trailer payload: 5,400 pounds
Truck bed: 1 bike 400 pounds
Truck cabin: 400 pounds
Total trailer and truck payload: 6,200 aprox
Now there is another option of trailer, smaller, that weighs 600/800 pounds less, it's the 6 by 12 from Uhaul store. It's smaller and i can fit 5 bikes and the other 2 bikes i can load them in the trucks bed.
What would you guys do?... Take the smaller trailer and save weight, and less wind drag? Would you take a Uhaul trailer on a long trip like this?...
... What do you think about this 17' trailer? Is it ok for my truck? Or i will be pushing it to it's limits?
Any advise would be very much appreciated...

You need to know the PAYLOAD of your truck as nearly every thread on this section of the form discusses.
In addtion, you are "guessing" the weight of your trailer. The tag shows GVWR of 7,000 and max cargo of 4,564, so your trailer weighs 2,436 plus anything you've added to it after it was made.
Since your tongue weight will most likely be over 500 pounds, you will need a weight distribution hitch. That's another 100 pounds.
I suspect you will be under payload for the truck, but you're going to be close.

I would guess you will be very close to slightly over on payload. Depending on how the axles are positioned and how you load the trailer, you might be under 500 on hitch weight, again going to be very close. A WD hitch with sway controls would be a good idea. You only have 3.31 Gears and are towing in very hilly areas, so it might be a slow go.
