Engine Selection
Hello, I’m in the process of purchasing a used 2011 F-150 Crew Cab the only problem is I don’t which engine I should pick regular v6 or v8. I’m planning to pull a travel trailer (27-29 footer) maybe ones moth. Which engine I should get?

Post the trailer wet and dry weight; also whether a 5th wheel or WDH setup. Is tow vehicle 2wd or 4wd?

3.7L is out of the question.
A 5.0 may be iffy because it can't get the max tow package, so payload will be an issue. Thre are many who choose to ignore that and just look at tow capacity, and then are hundreds of pounds over their GVWR, creating a potentially unsafe situation.
Your only real choices for that MY are the EB or 6.2.

I have the 5.0 crew 4x4 with the heavy duty payload package. Thats even better than the max tow. LT tires, stiffer frame, 2200 lbs payload. It's the next level above a max tow trim level.

For 2012 in USA, max tow required EcoBoost or 6.2L engine. HD Payload required EcoBoost or 5.0L engine.
So 5.0L with max tow not available, but you could get HD Payload without max tow. 6.2L with HD Payload not available, but you could get max tow without HD Payload. With EcoBoost engine and the right bed length, you could have both, or max tow without HD Payload.

Basically, a 5.0 with heavy duty package has EVERYTHING PLUS MORE than the max tow except it doesn't have trailer mirrors or brake controller standard. I added them as an option. Excluding the 6.2, In ranking order from weakest to strongest truck is ; standard f150, max tow f150 and followed by the heavy duty package. The frame is only strengthen on the heavy duty version.
Even with the max tow package, your payload rating will be 300 to 500 lbs less. If you tow a heavy trailer or heavy payload the only legal way without overloading the truck is the heavy duty payload option.
On a max tow payload on a super crew is only 1900 lbs. A trailer that weighs wet ( max) at 8000 lbs needs a 15% tounge weight of 1200 lbs. now include a wife (150), 2 kids each at 100 and a dog at 50 lbs. plus a some food and clothing at 401lbs........YOU ARE NOW OVER WIEGHT LEGAGLLY!!!!
My family and kids are with the added piece of mind of using the right equipment to get the job done right.
