Good point. Maybe I should tell you the whole story, short version. Started out as a 5 week trip, 1 week getting there, 3 weeks of there, 1 week of getting home. Oops, kid made the nationals in Van first week of our trip, no problem, a week at fort Langley driving to Van to watch that then off for 4 weeks. Great. Oops wife has a family reunion about 100k from home, last week of our trip. No problem we can do it in 3 weeks. So in 5 weeks no problem with the trailer, 3 weeks maybe not. But now we are leaning towards doing it in the trailer.

I say take the trailer... 3 weeks is plenty of time to make the drive and enjoy yourselves while doing it. Family memories is what it's all about! Besides you can't hang around the campfire with the family and make s'mores staying in a hotel!!!!!! :B

I will be camping from very south Michigan to Jasper AB, Ca and return in 3 or 4 weeks spring of 2015 no problem. Made many trips of your distance in 3 weeks camping.
Biggest savings camping "meals". Just plan where you will be camping before you leave, saves time and stress. We like state and national parks.
You could go by Glacier, Yellowstone, Teton, Teddy Roosevelt national Parks maybe Badlands, Mount Rushmore coming back.
We are just two and my wife loves camping.
Check out some rving sites to plan siteseeing and maybe get reservations at parks. Planning is part of the fun.
