You would be wrong to trust the factory needle. In most cases these will only climb when something is really wrong or the sensor is worse than an idiot light with a needle should be.

I think 2002FX4 hit it on the head . I vaguely remember someone commenting in the past that the Ford temp gauges were calibrated to always show middle of the scale unless there was a major failure . I`m hoping a Ford tech can comment on that .

I`m reading temps directly from the ECM on the aftermarket unit and I feel it is fairly accurate as I`ve shot some temps with an IR gun and it matched the aftermarket unit .
I guess my question should have been , how accurate is the in dash gauge ?

^ This. Low speed, high load, high ambient temperatures all add up to higher temperatures.

Keeping it in a lower gear in order to have the revs up a bit will help the cooling.
