Hello smokywren,

Quick question. I've benefitted a lot from your threads and posts. The 1,000 lbs you refer to above - is that based on ~ 13% (avg between 10% - 15%) of TVW on the tongue - so 13% of 7,700 = ~1,000?

There's a saying, those who can't afford a Ford, buy the lessor trucks. It is somewhat true, I have talked to a few guys who have admired my trucks over the years who wish they could have bought a Ford instead of what they had, but couldn't afford one. I have a Coworker who wanted the n 15+ F150 with the plow package, but went with a Ram because he couldn't afford one. It is a nice truck and such, but for me, I don't like their track record of becoming a rust bucket in a short time, or front ends falling apart before 60K.

Though the 98+ Superduties were also notorious for failing front ends after 60K, I had one, sure enough, had to replace the ball joints and hubs at 80K.

You need to go to rv.net about towing with a F250 6.2L Gas engine. A lot of misinformation here about the 6.2L.

Get the real facts, from real people towing with F250 6.2L gasser trucks and I think you'll end up buying one!

I almost bought one myself, a 2016. It was about the same price as a F150 with the same options/features. The F250 w/6.2L will get poorer mpg. I need good mpg to commute to work. The average from actual users there was about 10 mpg city, 12 mpg mixed, and about 14 to 15 mpg expressway. When gas goes back to $4/gallon, and it will, it'll beat the crap out of me.

I get 18.5 mpg mixed, 21.5 mpg expressway, and never lower than 17 mpg. That's really good mileage beating all my previous "mid" size SUVs with V6s. It gets about 1.5 mpg better than my previous 2012 F150. It has great tow capacity at 10,900 lbs and great 1/2 ton truck payload at 1890 lbs but it's limiting factor NOW is the 1,110 lbs hitch rating.

7700 lbs at an average 13% (of loaded trailer weight) is 1000 lbs tongue weight. If you're tongue weight percentage is higher or if you overload it slightly, you could be at your hitches limit.

BTW, the rating of that hitch receiver is with a "weight distribution hitch", so you don't add the weight of the hitch system to the tongue weight. It's rated at a tongue weight of 1,110 when using a "weight distribution hitch". Without the WDH, and using only a weight bearing hitch, then the hitch receiver is only rated at 500 lbs.

If gas mileage isn't a concern, a F250 for sure! Not sure I'd want to be the guinea pig on a newly redesigned 2017 F250, so I'd likely go with a 2016.

BTW, you don't need an Ecoboost 3.5L, the 5.0L is a great engine to tow with and has benefits over the Ecoboost when towing is concerned. Mainly the 5.0L has great power in the lower gears and right off of throttle, and has 'consistant' power where you have instant on demand power and don't have to wait for the power to come on. I'm not a fan of turbo gas engines for towing.

Also, you don't need diesel, it's costly in so many ways. Also you must drive it a lot for the regeneration to take place. To many headaches and costs for my liking. Diesel has it's place in commercial trucks but not in personal truck IMO.

Good luck on finding the truck that fits you, and not others who aren't driving it.

Take a look right now at the 16 SD trucks. I just picked up a 16 350 6.7 Dually decently equipped XL for 47900 tax and all out the door.

Are you going to a bigger horse trailer? Did you trade the 5.0 or keeping it? Enjoyed the posts btw.

So I decided to get another f150. I drove everything from the f250 diesel and gas to the dodge cummins and gas 2500 and chevy 2500 duramax and gas. I was close to buying the f250 diesel but at the last minute, decided to step back and think. I only tow my camper 10-15 times a year and never more than 2hrs away. I needed a good daily driver that could tow occasionally. Any diesel would be the wrong choice and I just didn't like the bigger trucks. My only gripe with my 13 f-150 was the 5.0 had to turn a good bit of rpm's to make power. I hated climbing hills in 3rd or 4th gear at 4k rpm. I ended up with a 16 xlt with the 3.5 eco with the max tow....12,200lbs tow capacity....loving it so far. Trying to get some miles on it before towing. Can already tell that it is a lot quicker than my 5.0. Hardly any turbo lag. This is coming from someone who has cursed anyone driving a truck without a v8. I have built many 302 engines for mustangs to drag race(years ago) and would be the first to say V8 or go home. Not anymore. I am impressed and hope it to be a gas mileage v6 when I need it and a torque monster when I tow. Only time will tell. So glad I didn't buy a 3/4 ton truck for daily driving

Good luck with the new truck. You'll have to post pics of the truck and post pics of the truck/trailer together. Just be careful with the payload.

The 3.55 gears on a 5.0L aren't the best for towing and why the previous generation had such a low tow rating when equipped with the 3.55 ratio.

I had 3.73 gears in the 2012 5.0L just as I do with my 2016 5.0L. I can tell you from the added power and lower weight, that the 2016 has a lot more get up and go than the previous 2012. It's like night and day but the 2012 had more than enough power to tow as well. I never had any want for more power. The upper rpms around 3500 or 4K never bothered me as I'm use to towing with V8 gas engines(even in class 7 rigs).

We are planning on a bigger trailer for next year possibly, and when I say bigger we are talking 20K GVWR trailer. So I decided to pounce on a 16 while I could still find what I was looking for. I drove a couple 17s too and they are nice, but not nice enough to walk away from all the rebates on top of x plan and some goodies this dealer threw in. I almost kept the 5.0 too but they gave me 22900 trade, I could not turn that down. I will stick around the forum though as I enjoy reading the posts and hopefully my 30 plus years of heavy towing experience helps somebody.
