my old 2011 with Ecoboost and 3.15 gears had a tow rating of 8600.. max tow package with 3.73s was 11,500.. not sure how your truck with 3.55 can only do 5000 lbs..

If you're seriously considering a gear swap, put a 4.10 gearset in it. The difference between 3.55 and 3.73 is very small and you'll hardly notice the difference.

This is a non ecoboost truck. Huge difference in capabilities.

Try a different dealer, mine said no problem and even offered to order a set of 4.10 gears from ford if I wanted them to. I might do it in a year or so if I start hauling 3 horses more often than two.

You may also need to look into cooling. The 7400 lb towing capacity and 3.73 gearing is part the towing package which also includes an upgraded tranmission cooler and maybe even a radiator(not sure on the radiator).

I dont know that the gearing reduction is needed for power but probably to help reduce stress on the transmission. I honestly dont know that 3.73's would make much of a difference and they certainly wont technically change the official GCWR or towing capacity of the truck.

The GCWR will change, as it's not an official number per se, the GVWR is a tagged number to the truck. The GCWR is based on engine, and gearing, it's independent of payload for the all except the highest ratings. For instance a 7050 rated SCAB and a 7350 rated one would have same GCWR for a given gear ratio. Ford only put HDPP restriction on the absolute max ones.

HTML Code:
The dealership would not do it even if I wanted to. They said it could void the warranty which I don't get since Ford lists the same engine with 3.73 at 7800#.
That sounds like total bull to me. It sounds like you talked to a service writer that didn't know what he was talking about. Ask him why the gear ratio change would void a warranty, I would go straight to Ford with your question.

My truck has a 8000 pound towing capacity with 3:55 gears. I'm going to change to 4:10 because I don't care about the fuel mileage effect but want better mountain towing.

What was the cost for that swap Commander. Can you give an idea on your MPG. I also have a '14 5.0 & 3.31 with electric locking axle. I love the truck.

My last truck was a 1997 F250 Light Duty 5.4 with 3.73 that towed beautiful. But gas mileage was 9 to 10 MPG around town and towing.

$200 for gears
$550 for differential
$300 labor
$150 misc items and oil
$250 for AFE diff cover

That's as good as I can remember.

I did the gear swap about a month after buying the truck new so the engine wasn't broken in yet. Right now the best mpg I can get is 17, but usually hangs out in the 14s
