You could probably look into a towing toad, like what KR Kodi uses for his trailer because his truck has similar low payload.

Nope - not even close!!

With a payload capacity of 1150 lbs, subtract the 400 lbs the family and dogs weigh (it's good that you're a bunch of lightweights with your limited payload!!) that leaves 750 lbs for your hitch head and trailer tongue weight.

Have you added anything to the truck since it came off the assembly line? If so you'll need to subtract their weight from your payload capacity.

Your WDH head probably weighs 50 lbs, so that leaves 700 lbs for tongue weight.

Tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of the wet&loaded trailer's weight, with a realistic minimum of 12% - which would limit you to a 5833 lb trailer.

Even at the absolute minimum 10%, the max trailer weight would be 7000 lbs.

And.....when you actually load up to tow, I bet you'll be way more than 400 lbs in the truck!! You'll probably have a cooler with some snacks in the cab, some firewood in the bed, and you might like to have some easy access to tire changing tools in the bed as well.

Things get heavier than you think real quick!! You have a very low payload capacity like I do (my door sticker says only 1115 lbs - and with my bed liner and tonneau I'm down to 1020 lbs!!), and I know that in reality your payload capacity limits you to a trailer less than 6000 lbs - at least if you want to stay within the published weight limits for your truck.

I got 7900 by the following: GCVW-GVWR=1550-7200=7900
15,500 GCVWR
- 7,200 GVWR
- ...400 loaded in truck
7,900 weight of the trailer you truck can tow or stop, but NOT HAUL

That size camper will OVERLOAD your truck suspension.
The truck engine can TOW it, but the suspension will be overloaded trying to HAUL all the weight you will have loaded on it. You don't have enough PAYLOAD.

KR Kodi has the numbers correct. I went with the XLT instead of the more deluxe models and got a 1607 lb. payload. Then I bought a camper that fit within the payload of the truck.

Thanks atw. I got the Platinum and not realizing it can't tow at all. I messed up also because I trusted the dealer and didn't get the "Max Tow" option which would of raised the GCWR to 17,200 lbs, not sure about the payload. This is my first truck and didn't realize payload is a very important feature. Does anyone know which half ton has the highest payload?

trexid: this should be a new thread. Whats a heavy duty tow package? Your hitch is only 1050 which is the standard tow.

As I said in an earlier post, my King Ranch is even more payload challenged than your truck!! My sticker says my payload capacity is 1115 lbs, and after adding my bed liner and tonneau cover, I'm down to 1020 lbs.

However, with my GCWR of 15,500, I can load my truck with people and cargo right up to its GVWR of 7200 lbs and I can still tow 8300 lbs.

I tow an enclosed car hauler to get my Vette to track events. Loaded up it weighs around 6300 to 6500, and it has a tongue weight of 720 to 750. NO PROBLEM!!

How do I do it?? In order to tow anything with a tongue weight more than a couple hundred lbs I needed a solution - and I found it!! A Trailer Toad

The Trailer Toad carries the entire tongue weight of the trailer, so I can load my truck up with the entire payload capacity. My Toad weighs around 300 lbs so if my truck is loaded to its GVWR of 7200, subtract that from the GCWR of 15,500 and I can pull 8300 lbs. Subtract the weight of the Toad, and I can pull an 8000 lb trailer an I'll be within limits.

If I load up the truck with 500 lbs less of people and cargo, then I could pull an 8500 lb trailer.

The Trailer Toad solved my towing problem!!

Yeah. The Ford F150 has the highest payload. I just depends which one you get. In 2014, the Max Tow Package increased the GVWR from 7200 to 7650 for the 145" 4x4 Ecoboost truck. It increased the payload by 380 lbs. In your case, that would have given you a 1530 payload. That's still not huge, but a help. If you went with the 157" truck, the HD Payload Package with Max Tow Package was available and increased the GVWR from 7350 to 8200. The maximum payload on that one was 2310. I have seen some that came in with an actual payload in the 1900-2000 range. The HD Payload Package was rare and usually required a special order. The Platinum just has lots of extras and they all bring down the payload.
