Can I Tow It?

Yup, brulaz covered it. If you want to see the difference go to a Cat scale and get the truck weighed 1) solo, 2) with trailer but w/o the WD hitch chained up, and 3) with the trailer and WD chains hooked and ready to go. You'll see how much the front axle unloads and then how much the WD hitch takes off the rear axle and puts back on the front and trailer axles.

Yes, you need the weight distributing (WD) hitch if your hitch weight might get even close to 500 pounds or more. The 500 pounds hitch weight in the trailer specs is the "dry" hitch weight. You will have more than 500 pounds hitch weight with a wet and loaded trailer. Ford requires a WD hitch for hitch weight more than 500 pounds. Your Ford factory receiver hitch is limited to 500 pounds hitch weight without a WD hitch. So definitely get a WD hitch.
The Equal-I-Zer brand these guys are pushing is the inexpensive bottom of the line as far as WD hitches go. I paid more for the much better Reese dual-cam Strait-Line Hitch/sway controller.
