New to towing. Need advice.
Couple questions:
1. I have a 2010 4.6L V8 with 3.55 axle. Super Crew 5.5ft bed. Max tow according to manual is around 7000lb. I have the towing package on the truck, but I'd like to know if there is anything else I can do to the brakes, transmission or engine to make the truck not have to work too hard or , and make it more efficient while towing? I only plan on towing a 4000lb travel trailer. I already have a ford OEM brake controller, sway control standard with truck, and weight distribution hitch with sway brake. Please advise.
2. While towing for first time while around 60-65mph it I can feel it shifting gears with an clunk once in a while. Seems between those speeds it was a sweet spot for hen it shifted. Is a bit of a clunk normal? I never hear it when not towing.

The 4.6 isn't exactly a workhorse when it comes to towing.

I would re gear the 3.73's which will help you get the load moving must faster and will help with you bouncing between gears since the rpm's will be slightly higher on the expressway. Get a edge programmer to pickup some hp and tq too. The gains won't be huge but every little bit helps.

Never mind. I was just told by a reputable transmission shop in my area that I could re-gear it but since it's only a 4.6L I won't notice much difference. Said I would spend a lot of money for nothing. He told me if all I'm pulling is 4000lbs, and if I keep my trailer tow/haul on and keep to the flat lands of Michigan (which I plan to) that I should be fine and it's not necessary to re-gear. Got to love honest repair shops! I got this truck used before I got into trailer camping and towing so at that point towing capacity and axel ration really wasn't an issue. My next truck will be trailered better to towing. Still a great truck since I'll likely only be trailering 3 times a year.
