Default Anti sway hitch?

At what point is one needed? A certain weight or a certain trailer length?

Anti-sway and weight distribution are two different things. A Lot of the high end WDHs come with anti-sway built in. THe cheaper ones, like the two I have, do not, but you can add antisway with a separate friction bar or two.

In my research, you need WDH after 5000 lbs and 500 lb tongue weight. I expect it is similar for anti sway.

I've seen a small u-haul trailer wag a little Tacoma truck around to the point of almost wrecking him on the interstate. Sway control is always a good idea, and I've never regretted my Equalizer WDH.

X2. Get a Reese Straight Line or an Equalizer. Safety and peace of mind.

I had both equalizer and anti-sway on my 4500 lb trailer (loaded) and for the minor cost associated with them both, I can't see a reason not to have it.

I find it really confusing when folks use the term "equalizer" for a WDH (weight distribution hitch) without any sway control. In fact I got burned once by a salesman who claimed not to know the difference between that and "Equal-I-Zer" which is a brand name for a fancy WDH with built in sway control.

Just saying ...

Ok, I had a weight distributing hitch and a separate sway control. They both worked well.

Thanks. I currently use a separate friction bar as well, but hope to upgrade to a true Equal-I-Zer someday.

Nice tow vehicle in the picture.
