Default 4 Pin Connector?

I'm new to towing but I have plans to eventually hook up to my Dad's enclosed car trailer. My truck is a 2010 with the 7200# GVWR package and trailer towing package but it came with a 4 pin trailer plug and a 3 pin rectangle plug ? Is this normal? What do I need to do to hook up to a trailer with a 7 pin connector? My truck does not have the electric trailer brake controller but I am going to add the OEM one into the dash. I'll be looking for info on adding the ETBC also.

Just get a 7 pin adapter that plugs into either of the ones you have now.

So the 4 pin would be for trailer lights and the 3 pin square is for electric brakes (after installation of the ETB controller)??

I've never heard of a 3 pin square, but if an orange, blue, and purple wire go into it those are the 3 you would be missing from the 4 pin.

If not then look back a couple feet behind the 4 pin. Should be a harness. You can get an adapter from Ford to hook in there and run a true 7 pin.

I'll try to get some pics at lunch time and post them up. It is a weird setup! LOL!

From the pics, you have a 7-way (7 pin) trailer plug and a 4-way trailer plug. All you need is the TBC, fuse and relay for the charge wire, and ford to enable the TBC in the with their computer (only if you install a ford TBC). The 4-way plug should have; ground, right turn, left turn, and tail markers (parking lights)- basic trailer function. The 7-way will have those plus; TBC wire, reverse lights, 12v charge wire.

Sweet! Thanks guys...that is what I wanted to hear. It was a little confusing because my window sticker says 4 pin (but listed under standard equip) The Trailer Tow Package must add the 7 pin plug! It would have been nice of the tow package to include the TBC but that would make too much sense!

You should look for a little baggie with the relay and fuse in our work trucks it's always been in the glove box
