I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I've never been to any campgrounds that had curbs on their roads or pads. That sounds more like an RV park than a campground.

Even before I had my F150s and Jay Flights:

For me, yes 4WD is a necessity for towing.

The first time you pull on to some really loose gravel or dirt going up a grade when it's raining....that's when you'd like to have it. Had a 2wd Titan for 10yrs. Never thought much about 4x4,.... then pulling a 6k 20' enclosed trailer through the Portland Oregon vineyards it happened. Don't have to have 4x4. ....but it sure comes in handy! :IMO:

I've pulled 4 round bales on a Big Tex traiker up a steep gravel road many times with no issues. One time I had to stop at the base of the hill and then start up it from a standstill. I really could have used 4wd then.

While some of the better gravel pads aren't bad, the mud or slight gravel pads get very very muddy quick. I've seen people bury their tires trying to pull in these conditions.

Then on top of that, grass gets very very slick. I've seen people get stuck in wet grass as well.

Not a big deal if you have a locking axle while not towing, but when pulling a heavy trailer, you can dig ruts pretty quick. As I said, a friend had to have his trailer and Chevy 2500 2WD pulled out by backhoe.

E-locker works excellent in that scenario as well.
