So I have a 2012 ecoboost 4wd super crew xlt. I recently installed a factory trailer brake controller and got it activates by the dealer. The truck came with a factory tow package but just didn't have the trailer brake controller. I hooked it up to my trailer and the brakes don't work the display says no trailer or trailer disconnected. I installed the fuse and the relay under the hood as well. All the lights and signals work fine on the trailer but not the brakes does anyone know how to fix this issue I'm having

When you installed the controller, did you plug it into the correct place in the wiring harness under the dash?


Have you checked the 7-pin plug on the back bumper to be sure the brake pin is "hot" when you step on the truck brakes? Use a 7-pin plug tester that tells you if something is wrong with any of the circuits in the electric plug on the back of the pickup.

Yeah I used the correct plug is was the only one that was there and it fit perfect. I haven't checked if my brake circuit is hot yet

Just to follow up on what Smokey Wren said. If you don't have a 7 pin tester, try this one from Amazon IIT 7 Blade & 4 Pin Tester. It's only $10 and works on both 4 pin & 7 pin connectors. I carry one in each of my tow vehicles (F150, F350, & 2 Escapes) as I buy & sell a lot of trailers. It will tell you if the tow vehicle or trailer is at fault.

I tested it with a multimeter and got nothing at the brake pin. Every other pin works fine but no power at the brake one.

There won't be any juice at the trailer brake pin in the plug unless someone is stepping on the brake pedal while you check the pin.


Next step is to double check that you plugged the fuse and relay into the correct holes in the power distribution box under the hood. Use the fuse diagram in your Owner's Guide to see which places the fuse and relay should be plugged into. The relay doesn't matter as it is for parking lights. But there are three different fuses that can affect trailer brakes:


Under the dash in the fuse box:
-- 10-amp mini fuse in #37 for trailer brake control.


Under the hood in the power distribution box:


-- 30-amp cartridge fuse in #17 for trailer brake control
and
-- 10-amp mini fuse in #46 for brake on/off. Ford installed that one, but it may be blown out

I checked voltage as my wife was stepping on the brakes. I will check all those fuses tho thanks

I just checked all the fueses and they are good. Could it be a problem with the programming

Absolutely no voltage? Or just low voltage?

When the truck isn't moving, it doesn't put out much to the trailer brakes when you hit the peddle. Don't recall if it's zero though.

Try adjusting the brake controller to the max of 10, then holding the bar all the way over. Still nothing?

I adjusted it to 10 and when stepping on the peddle there is 1.5 volts when holding the controller together there is 9 volts.
