Trailer brakes are only required by law in most states if the trailer has a GVWR of 3,000 lbs. or more. Some who tow small trailers with less capacity don't have trailer brakes, but still need a hitch receiver and trailer lights.

When you ordered the truck, if you told the sales person you wanted the towing equipment, and if the sales person didn't ask if you wanted a trailer brake controller and explain why you would need one, then the sales person was incompetent. They're SUPPOSED to know more about the product than the customer and guide the customer to get the functionality he wants. Find another sales person the next time you order a truck.

Oh my! You could spend the rest of your life looking for a car salesman who knows anything about towing.

Jumping in with a question or two:

Just bought a used 2015 XLT V6 3.5L Eco-boost. It has the HD tow package, but not the TBC.

1. Any recommendations for where to purchase the TBC? Saw the Ford OEM one on eBay for $95. Any non-OEM ones to consider?

2. Since it has the HD tow package, can I assume that it is already wired to accept the TBC?

3. We drove a new 2015 XLT, and noticed in the glove box a 4-wire wiring harness with a large connector on the end. We pointed out that the used one we bought didn't have that, so I think he just took it from the new truck and gave it too us. I've seen some videos about installing the TBC and it looks like this harness is only used if you use a non-OEM TBC. Does that sound right?

4. Since we'll still need to get it "flashed" by the dealer, I like people's comments that they were able to get it done under warranty. I think I'll try that

Thanks.

1. I paid 93 with shipping from Tasco. They are a supporter and vender of this site. link

2. My XLT was pre wired

3. That is for an aftermarket controller if you want to install one of those instead. The advantage of the Factory one is, it integrates into the sway control of the truck. I do not know how well it works, but chose to go the factory route.

4. I would.

Thanks SKBORDERS. I've ordered the TBC from Tasca.

Do you (or anyone else) have recommendations for a plastic pry tool set to help disassemble the console to get to the wiring harness? Looking at some YouTube videos, it looks like it's a combination of prying some clips and unscrewing some screws.

Answering my own question: I purchased a 5-piece set from Amazon for about $15. There's a thread on this forum and some YouTube videos that show how to disassemble the dash to get to the slot where the TBC goes. I went slow, so it took me about an hour to do the whole thing, but everything went as expected.
