2012 3.5l tow
just bought a 2012 3.5l f150 and I tow a 5000lbs. boat what kind of mpg can I expect? I had a 2007 sport trac with 4.6l that would get 9- 10 mpg in hilly situations and about 12- 13 mpg's on flat roads. just looking for a comparison. thanks!

I get 11 mpg on my Ecoboost pulling a 5,500 lb RV trailer at 60 mph.
You should at least get that . . . . probably more.

My 2012 F-150 EcoBoost CrewCab 4x2 and 3.15 axle averages about 10 MPG on premium gas when towing my 5,000-pound TT on the plains at 65 MPH. MPG falls to around 8 to 9 MPG in hills or with a stiff headwind. Your boat is probably more aerodynamic than my TT, so I would expect about one to two more MPG when towing under the same conditions and at the same speed.
MPG with premium gas when towing is just enough better to pay for the difference in price of the premium vs. regular unleaded gas. But the truck loves the premium, so since it doesn't cost any more per mile towing, I usually fill up with premium when towing and run regular when not towing.

I bought a 2010 F150 Crew Cab 4WD 5.4L 3V with 3.55 axle. I got around 10 mpg towing my 19BH.
I bought a bigger camper, a 2012 Jay Flight 26BH and the mpg was the same, around 10 mpg even though the new camper was 1500 lbs heavier and 6' longer. The 2012 has a more rounded, aerodynamic front wall.
I then bought a 2012 F150 Crew Cab 4WD 5.0L 4V 3.73 axle truck. When I pull the 26BH, I get even better mileage at 11 mpg.
Indiana is very windy so most of my trips involve a lot of wind. I found wind will reduce mpg much greater than hills.
The moral of the story, is that a more aerodynamic trailer, bigger truck, with more powerful engine will get better fuel economy as there's less resistance and less strain when towing.
With a little aerodynamic 5000 lbs boat I would expect around 13 mpg, more if you had a 5.0L. The Ecoboost is a thirsty little engine.

Mine's a 5.0, but I tow a similar weight boat with a full hardtop. I get 12-13. It drops to 11 when I add a 1,000' climb near Lake George. With the EcoBoost, you might get 1 mpg better. If it's a bowrider or something that isn't 10 feet tall on the trailer like mine, you might do even a bit better.

U will get 10-14 depending on terrain/wind.
