Blckwlf's F150
Figured I'd do one thread to capture the ongoing saga that is my F150 XLT 2000 5.4l V8 Triton 4x4.
Not planning to build anything massive or fabricated, but am planning on several improvements.
To start, a brief history.
I came to know this truck while visiting my grandfather in Kentucky, he used it with a truck bed water tank to haul water from the water tower to his trailer in the backwoods. He bought it used, in 2001.
In 2005 he lost his final fight with cancer, this time in his brain, after previously winning his fight with lung cancer. He was previously a mechanic in Chicago and a former antique gun dealer.
My Mother inherited the truck from her father when he passed. In 2011 it spun a bearing and she had the engine rebuilt, along with a new water pump, some hoses, some wires, etc.
This last February 2015 she had retired it, my father bought her a jeep for their anniversary which was just a week after the retirement of the truck. Smart man.
The truck was retired because the transmission fluid cooling coil, in the radiator, sprung a leek. This drew water into the tranny, obviously that's not good. Started having some chattering in the gear changes.
This summer she said I could have it, free and clear, if I got it fixed.
It's my first vehicle, the one I learned to drive in, and took the driving test in (yes at 16 years old I parallel parked this beast in the DMV parking lot!).
So, a rebuilt transmission and new radiator, new fuel pump, filter, and spark plugs. And here she is!
Attachment 400306
Title was officially transferred to my the last week of September. Took possession two weeks before that.
Drove her for a week, had a short in the wiring harness for the transmission, torque converter, O2 sensors and shift solenoid. Apparently wiring harnesses aren't supposed to touch the exhaust manifold, go figure. Repaired that.
Oil change. Wash and wax, headlight restoration.
Attachment 400062Attachment 400063
Fixed the overhead console compass and thermometer. Using my highly refined soldering skills.
Fixed the in dash pull out cup holder/ashtray with a ton of JB Weld. Why does Ford want $150 for a replacement? No pic.
Cleaned and inspected the brakes, and brake fluid flush, lots of air in them. Need to replace drivers side brake cable.
Now I'm working on flushing the heat core, which has not been working for years, and dealing with a misfire on cylinder 1.
On the heat.
I've got airflow, blower works. Thermostat functioning perfectly (tested with Scanner at Auto parts store). Blend door is intact and working (cut a hole under the glove box and looked at it).
So, I'm gunna try flushing the heater core with a flush radiator flush kit and garden hose before finding a competent friend and pulling the whole dash... Hopefully the flush works.
On the misfire.
Gunna pull the plug and coil, clean and inspect, reinstall and scan. If no fix then replace plug, scan. If no joy, then replace boot, scan. If no joy, replace coil, scan. Seem good?

Current "Wishlist":
(Feel free to add comments, recommendations, input and reviews.)
1. Tire's!!!! Gunna need these sooner than I want to admit, use tire protectant, the sun here in AZ is brutal!
2. Hurculiner. Bed, wheel wells, and the rocker panels.
3. Torsion bar crank. And wheel alignment.
4. Plastidip whole truck. Matte Black grill, wheels, hood, roof, and tailgate. Desert tan body.
5. Jerry cans mounted in bed, one gas one water. By tailgate behind wheel wells. Lockable.
6. A lift/jack. Not sure to go with a high lift or a truck jack... Don't really think ill need a high lift on the road... Definitely need a truck jack (see pick of working on brakes above).
7. Seat covers, tactical kryptek highlander camo. Front and back.
8. Weather tech floor liners.
9. Under backseat storage solution, likely custom fabricated. Want steel, locking, security, gun box.
10. Radio. Want a usb port radio. Maybe Bluetooth...
11. Dual battery/auxiliary power, maybe solar.

Radiator flush and garden hose through the heater core seems to have worked. After engine warm up, I can feel a noticeable heat out of the vents and its 90 degrees out here... I'll see in the morning!
Now the Misfire in Cylinder 1 was supposed to be relatively easy. Remove coil, remove plug, clean. New plug. Scan. If no fix then replace coil as well.
Turns out it was just the plug that needed replacing. So that's great, $4.99 fix. Cleaned the coil real good too. Attachment 400118
But the thread sleeve that goes into the plastic manifold that the COP gets bolted to was loose and was just spinning. Took about 30 minutes of playing with it, prying it and cursing to get the coil off the engine. Attachment 400119
Cleaned and JB Welded the sleeve back in, let it set for a few hours (quickset), then continued. Attachment 400120
The Coil Channel (if that's what it's called), was dirty and wet. Cleaned it the best I could and took a hair dryer to it to dry it up before pulling the plug. The plug came loose effortlessly, didn't even need the ratchet... Swapped it with a new one and took it to the auto parts store for scanning. Taught the lovely blonde girl how to use the scanner, was unable to get her number...
Scan came clean! All systems go!

Well, dammit.
Heat don't work no more...
My guess is an air bubble and that I'll be burping the system tomorrow.
