2012 STX remake of my '95 Lightning
#15
Nothing right now. I've got a couple trips coming up that I would rather drive this truck than my my wifes vehicle or my work truck so might as well have the 3.31 in for gas savings. I'll probably make some runs at the track also and try to do the math to estimate whether or not it would be better to use a 3.73 instead. I also think I'm going to wait till I can find a different place to get the gear set from since I had so many problems with backorders and wrong parts from tasca. It sucks since I was really hoping to have it done by now but since its not hurting anything (except my e.t.s) I'll just see how things play out.

Proudly Rockin the XL!
Very nice, great looking street truck! Love the look of the regular cab/short bed combo, especially lowered
The Boss manifold looks awesome; do you know what the power gain was?
I know you said "posi-trac" isn't in your budget right now, but since you're still working on getting the new gears, I will STRONGLY encourage you to save a little longer and get a gear-based limited-slip differential. About 4 years ago, I had an Eaton Detroit Truetrac installed in my '08 along with gears (truck came with 3.31s, I first went to 4.10s but that was too much and a bad match for my 4.2L & M5OD manual combo, gas mileage was HORRIBLE and performance didn't improve much, so I dropped back to 3.55s), and I absolutely LOVE having it. The truck has never had a traction problem; both wheels bite and it goes. Just yesterday I took the boat out, ramp was steep and slick, I just revved it up, let the clutch out quickly, and the truck hauled the trailer out of the water as if it were on flat ground.
To have a new diff installed along with the gears shouldn't be much additional cost, whereas having the new diff installed later would probably cost about the same as the new diff itself. Just some food for thought.

Cost isn't really the problem. It's the fact that with the '11+ it uses a different design on the rear which makes Ford the only supplier currently for any type of differential (or ring/pinion). That's kinda where I'm at right, I am just going to wait and see if some of the aftermarket suppliers catch up and start making ring/pinion and diff. I would much rather have a Detroit tru-trac or similar, it just doesn't exist yet.
