Step 1, put +12 volts directly on the 87a pin and measure voltage at pin 30. This is the normally closed contact of the relay so the +12 volts should be on that pin when the relay coil isn't energized.
Step 2, you'll want to put +12V on pin 86 and ground on pin 85. While doing this, listen for a "click" inside the relay. It'll make that sound when the coil is energized and tries to move the internal switch from the 87a to the 87 pin.
Step 3, if the coil operated correctly pin 87 should now be connected to pin 30 (as long as you keep +12V on pin 86 and ground on pin 85.) Now you'll put +12V on pin 87 and measure pin 30.
thanks. i'll give this a try to see what happens. for some reason five pin relays (87 & 87a) are expensive in my area. i dont want to have to buy another one. i didnt notice a click when i was messin with it the other day.

Thanks to the OP for the write up. Although I didn't use rigid, I did use some of the ideas and the relay wiring was exactly what I was looking for. For some reason it didn't work for me the first go-round. But the second time I wired everything up she worked. I guess I should have been sober the first time. Lol.

Glad you got it figured out.

Thanks for your help also. You have much more knowledge then I do.
I wired in an extra relay for some future LED's up front. I used Kawell 18watt for the reverse lights. Thinking about using some 20watt Kawell Duelys up front.

sorry to stir up an old post... but curiosity has got me asking... when you guys are driving down the road and turn the switch on...im assuming the add on lights (KC or LED) come on, but the main question is.... do the reverse lights in both tail lights come on too????

Thanks!

Nope, but there is a wire included with the kits that allows the lights to come on without flipping the switch when you put it in reverse.

I was asking because I am making my own harness for these lights and wanted to be sure that they wouldn't turn on. I already have the lights wired to come on in reverse (tapped into the trailer plug). Is there a wire that runs in the drivers door sill that I can get power from instead of running all the way to the back of the truck for reverse light power?

My post on the first page of the thread shows a location in the engine bay.
