Awesome thread! I was trying to think of a way to do exactly this setup. I'll be using two halogens under the rear bumper and two 7" led bars under the headache rack for additional lighting in the bed

Running halogens pulls more amps, relays work better with that amperage.

If using LED's with low amps toggle switches are fine. However, these relays are for activation in backup, etc.

Default One set of lights, three switches

Hello
Thanks for the wiring diagram it has me on my way. I'm wiring LED bed rail lights and I would like to operate them from 3 sources. The In-Cab bed light switch, a pushbutton switch in the bed and finally a magnetic switch on the tailgate. Would I wire the source from the in cab light where you connected the reverse lights? Also in your list of things need, you said 3 relays. Where is the third one used?
Thanks again!

I am curious, I am very capable of doing wiring but terrible at figuring out the technicals of it. If I run a couple of low amperage LED's wired into the reverse circuit would I need to use a relay?

All to much wiring and complication. I did mine with a remote on my key chain . All the connections at a small weatherproof box at the battery.
Just a 2 conductor cable in a plastic wire loom to the back.

Depends on what you are going for. LED's make it easier as the current is minimal. If you want to be able to turn your lights on without reverse, with reverse, or turn them off even when in reverse. You are going to have a few more wires.

This was obviously written before the huge progress and demand for LEDs, so yes mine were wired for around 25-40 amps. Needing multiple relays and triggers for what I wanted. I also wanted a switch outside to turn them on when camping and a switch in the truck which over rides ever other switch. So can be a little more complicated.

words are too hard to follow do you have a schematic instead? (I can't tell; firewall at work blocks most pictures)

20 years ago I re-wired the bed light in my ranger to work from a SPST switch I added to the dash.

Is this still a How-To?
