I'm not a mechanic and I don't play one on TV. ;-) That being said, I overcame my fear and just went for it today. 5 hours later, no broken plugs, and I'm done! Phew!!! The only thing I did was run 2 8 oz cans of 44k in the tank the week leading up to it. I did have 2 boots bonded to the porcelain. Is this normal? I replaced the boots. Your write up really helped. Thank you.

Thank you for the great write up. I did mine last night in a about 3 hours including the 1 hour waiting for the PB Blaster to penetrate.

Mine is a '05 with 90k miles and all 8 came out without issue following this procedure.

Thanks again.

Thanks grss429. I still have my '05 F150 and it has about 96k on it, so I was going to attempt the plug change sometime soon.

Diving in tomorrow. Order listle tool today from Amazon for $62. Should be here tonight. Picking up plugs from Advance. Praying none break but I'm ready if they do.

Default Did I miss something?

Did you happen to mention how many miles on your truck? Sorry if I overlooked it. You mentioned once you heard a whistle? Have you checked for a vacuum leak? In the old days we would take a carb cleaner and spray around the manifold waiting for a rpm increase. In today's politically correct world using WD40 would be a safer approach (but not quite as effective).....

I know this is an old thread, but I've been needing to change my plugs and came across it a couple months ago. So, I've been studying the original post over and over and over in my head for days until I decided to finally tackle it last night. I only had about 3 hours of light left after I got home from work to mess with it, so I got 4 of them successfully changed without breaking any before I had to stop. The truck has 97,000 on it and the plugs have already been changed at least once at 62,000 from the previous owner (I have the receipt), which eased my nerves a little, but just like everyone else has said on here, I went painstakingly slow and just eased them out one creak at a time. Now, I get to finish the other ones this evening after work. I want to say how I hope it will go, but I don't want to jinx myself, so I'll shut up about that Anyway, thank you OP for the awesome write up!

You most likely had up-dated SP-515 plugs in it already since they were changed already... they don't break.

No the previous owner, who happened to be a close friend of mine and my neighbor, had the shop at the end of our road change them to Autolites. That's the only reason I even attempted it. If I hadn't seen that receipt, I would've never tried it.
