HOW TO: Diagnose your 4x4 system. ESOF
#231
I keep reading threads with people saying the front shaft DOES spin in 2wd...some say only a little, some say more. What would you say to these people?
It seems to me that it should not. Presently, the one in my Expedition is (or was before I tore the transfer case apart). My thinking is that the Electro-mag clutch is worn...creating more friction than it should, and driving the front half of my drivetrain. What do you think?
Thanks in advance
Noah

Has your 4x4 solenoid on the firewall behind the battery been replaced? If not, I would start there. It's cheap.

ok question? i have 07 manual 4x4 shift. its a 5.4 auto ext cab. when i shift it into 4x4 light comes on but it doesn't go into 4x4. when I shift it into 4x4 low it will change the gear ratio but 4x4 does not work. I can jack the front end up pull the vacuum off and when i spin the tire the half shaft spins does this mean the solenoid in the firewall is bad? or is there more i need to look at?( limited mechanical know how) thanks for any help

Hand Installable Front Hub Seal - By National Oil Seals
Another success with National Seal 710825 (Front Hub Seal), Installer was getting ready to put in the Ford O.E.seal and our salesman offered the National Seal if the Ford one broke. Of course the installer did break the Ford seal and was very happy to have the National one on standby. Balch’s Automotive in Colonial Heights, VA is now a believer in the ease of installation and efficiency of usage. This is a hand installable seal for the front hubs and ESOF
Installer wants to know when we will be making the larger seals for the newer model Ford trucks.
The answer is....DEMAND....If we need to supply it we will.

In that case you are probably going to have to go to the dealer to have the electronics scanned. Normal OBD-II scanners will not find problems with the 4x4 system. Your dealer will have special diagnostic equipment.

Had it happen to me this past week. I had the window down and heard the tell-tale playing card in bicycle spokes sound. Knowing I had changed the passenger side IWE around the time I wrote this guide, I ordered another to replace the driver's side. I swapped it out today. It took me about an hour. There was clearly rust in the old IWE - original to the truck with 100K miles on it now for all I know. The diaphragm movement was not smooth. After working it back and forth a few times, I started to see rust dust come out of the vent nipple. I installed the new IWE and all is well.
Remember, this system is simple and fairly rugged. Parts do wear out over time. Follow the guide here and you can diagnose any mechanical issue you may be having.
