I just cleaned my MAF(157,000+) miles. I have been pulling 0171 and 0174 codes for several days and the truck cutting off on me. The codes are gone and I am going to drive it now to see if it runs without shutting off. I am about to replace the entire timing system as I locked out the phasers over 3 years ago and I have never been happy with it. I lost power, MPG, and confidence when I travel. Thanks for the post as I have lost all confidence in Ford Dealerships and their integrity to be honest with what the real problem is for the customer with out all the addons.

Damn, I just cleaned the MAF sensor and the difference in idle is amazing. Another one of those incredibly easy and inexpensive fixes that make a huge improvement

Help...

Hello... new guy here looking for a little feedback.

I went through the MAF and throttle body cleaning as described in this thread. Thank you. It worked great... but....

I have an '04, 5.4 2wd SCrew - 130,000 on it. It has been garbage since 40,000 miles an I got the runaround from dealers and private mechanics.

I had the timing chain, guides and cam phasers done around 90,000.

I have/had stalling at idle, throttle hesitation/hiccups/backfiring under load (specifically going up big hills), low power in a variety of situations, etc. I had given up and have just been waiting for it to die so I can have a new engine put in.

After a friend steered me your direction, I got excited that maybe the 5.4 was more than just an anchor.

I followed the directions here and cleaned the MAF and the throttle body intake - this was NASTY!

It worked great - for a day.

It ran great for 10 miles or so the night I changed it. It ran great for my wife going to work the next morning. The CEL popped back on when she started it after work, although it still was idling well at this point.

It idled well for another day and I reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery.

Even though the idle was good and the truck had good power, the CEL would come back on once the truck was turned off and restarted.

Now, 3 days later, the rough idle has returned.

Any thoughts?

Next up is a fuel filter change... then plugs and Accel COPs.

I'm a little confused that it ran well for 2 days and then went back to the original symptoms of rough idle and stalling at idle.

Thanks,
Josh.

Don't forget to check the fuel pump drivers module behind the spare tire mounted on the frame. With that kind of mileage I wouldn't be surprised if it was in bad shape. Mine was shot after 60k. Made a huge difference in the way the truck ran.

What's the check engine light code for? Have you checked it yet?
I thought mine was the TB but it was just too low of an idle set by the PCM (fixed with an edge programmer) and a faulty circuit board (fixed by repeatedly plugging the wiring harness back in whenever there were issues).

I can't really give you help until we know what the CEL is for, it may be as simple as one of the electric plugs on the throttle body came loose after 2 days around town because it wasn't plugged all the way back in when you put the TB back in. It's all speculation until that CEL has a definitive reason for being there.

without the code its pointless to even mention anything else. The code will help everyone here get you the proper help. It could be something as simple as a cracked pcv valve hose creating vacuum problems.

Thanks,

autozone should do it for free, some dealers might hook you up for free too. But if you have a tuner they also pull codes.

Updates
=============
After cleaning TB, it ran well for a couple of days then started with the rough idle.

After Sea Foam through gas tank, it started idling better - some surging, but instead of stalling it would hold an idle better.

It's still not right, though and I need to go through emissions. According to the I/M tests from the OBD II reader, there are 3 or 4 things that won't pass - all of them Cat or Oxygen related.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
