How to Change IWE Solenoid
#11
When I bought my truck I read about this issue and decided to go ahead and replace it before it went out. If you look in his picture there is room for another one. Since my old one wasn't actually bad I stuck it on the new mount with the cover so now I have a spare just in case I am somewhere that I will need to take advantage of a spare one. All that I will need to do is move the plug and vac lines to the spare IWE solenoid

Great write up! Just wanted to add that the electrical connector can be un plugged by pressing down on the top instead of prying up with a flat head or girly fingernails. Sometimes they break if pryed up!

My 4x4 works but when it shifts in to 4 low it clunks hard. Everything is new but I dont think this part is. Does it cause the clunk? My friends 04 with 160k sounds like silk and he beats the tar out of his. Mine is pampered and never been in the mud. I just bought it.

You should make sure you have this part but I would suggest having someone else (other than your pal) sit in your truck when you shift into 4x4. There is a little noise to be expected when shifting and each truck is totally different. Mine never made any noise when I shifted and I treated it great. Some trucks just sound different. Check it out and just see if that's the case, this part has a grinding associated with it when failure arises AND your clunk noise would be getting progressively worse.

It's cheap enough I'm going to try it. I had the dealer listen to it.......the service manager said don't worry it's ok. One of his tech's said no boss, it's not right. A argument began to take place between the two of them and I just said screw it and left. I then drove down to the used car side and thay had two for sale. One with 110k and one with 68k and both of them made a smooth shift sound.

I've been having a similar problem with my truck. Grinding in 2 wheel...shift to 4 wheel and it's quiet. I changed the solenoid on the driver side firewall and it didn't fix the problem. Is this other solenoid behind the battery on the 2010 as well? I've checked the vacuum lines and can't find anything and now it seems to be intermittent...sometimes it will be just fine in 2 wheel and the next trip has to shift to 4 wheel to get it to quiet down.
