Change the Valve Stem Seals (How Too) 351m
This is what I learned this weekend with help from a few guys on this forum.
I figured I would write a how too on this. I havent found any how too's on this subject.

I then replaced the old seal with the new seal.
This one is flexable and rubbery.
Done this is it. Put it back the same way you pulled it appart.

That is the basic valve seal for most ohv motors. You do not have to pull the head to do it however. Bring the piston to TDC, lock the crank in place and fill the cylinder with compressed air to hold the valve closed.

The fitting you need to fill the cylinder with air comes with most compression testers. An alternative method is to lower the piston in the cylinder, feed some rope into the spark plug hole leaving the end sticking out of the hole, and turn the crank to press the rope against the valves which will hold them in place.

Buy some laping compound, since you disturbed the valve removing it. The sealing edges of the valve and seat wouldn't be a match anymore. Laping would clean the areas of the seal/seat and give good compression once more. You may get burned exhaust or have pops coming back thru your air cleaner from a badly seated intake valve.
