Yes, put it in neutral.

Because your vehicle’s engine is also electronically controlled by a
computer, some control conditions are maintained by power from the
battery. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed,
the engine must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum
driveability and performance. To begin this process:
1. With the vehicle at a complete stop, set the parking brake.
2. Put the gearshift in P (Park) (automatic transmission) or the neutral
position (manual transmission), turn off all accessories and start the
engine.

Don't mean to sound like I dont know what you are talking about, but I dont know what youre talking about. Any suggestions on what I would do to correct the issue.

I am new to Ford, purchased this vehicle used as a tow vehicle. Live in Florida it is still pretty hot here without a/c.

thanks

Just did the process and it worked great. Truck seemed fine before but I wasn't happy with the fuel mileage (15.5mpg) and now I am getting anywhere from 18 to 21 on the same drive. CRAZY

After changing the battery and running into the dreaded idle problem, this process seemed like just the answer!! But on the ten mile drive to finish the process, stalled while coasting to a stop. Crap!!

So, cleaning the throttle body seems like the next logical step?

Also, I had previously cleared the engine code p0506, before doing this; the engine threw the code again when I first turned on AC. Should I clear the code again, or leave it be, and try the process again?

ETA: '05 4.6L STX, 175k miles
