So I'm having issues...! As said I have a pioneer AVH-X5500bhs unit. I just purchased a cheap cam off eBay. My problem is A black screen when I select reverse, with the message, "image may appear reversed". Here is what I have done... 1. Connected the camera power lead into the 7 point tow harness at the rear, with the red wire to the purple/black and the black wire to the ground, on mine it's the white wire. (I have had a previously installed wireless cam to these wires and it worked). 2. I have connected the reverse wire from the head unit harness to the purple/black on the sill by the drivers floor panel. 3. Connected the av wire from camera to av/in on rear of pioneer unit. I have tried switching polarity in the settings and switching the camera to ON in settings but still have the black screen. Sorry for the long post, just tried to be detailed As possible. Thanks in advance

Figure it out, I was connected to AV/in not RC/IN lol

About to install a license plate backup camera on my 04 Screw.

I have checked the wiring behind my HU and see the AV IN cable and the reverse sensor cable.

Since my truck has the reverse parking sensors, does anyone know if the reverse sensing wire might be available somewhere in that bottom cluster of wires - as opposed to trying to run a wire to the kick panel? (I sure hope that made sense...)

Default Head unit Switches To Backup With Brake?

Resurrecting an old thread here but I'm having issues that I can't figure out how to fix..

I've had my backup camera Installed with my pioneer head unit for 2 years now and all of a sudden its doing a really weird thing..

My unit Switches to the back up screen when I hit my brake. I don't get a picture because my cameras power is hooked up to my reverse light. But the thing is, it does this some times and other times won't do it at all. I've checked my connection for the reverse wire and it's connected to the black with pink stripe wire. Never moved or anything.

Any ideas?

I would trace all the wires, and look for any bare spots. Seems like it could be rubbing metal somewhere along the line.

I agree with Powerranger, but while you're at it, get rid of the connection to the reverse lights and run a wire along the video cable back to the head unit and pick up the power behind the dash.

The reason I didn't suggest using the reverse lights for power in my original post is because I feel that the more connections you can make under the dash in a clean and dry environment, the better off you are.

You'll also be able to turn on your camera without being in reverse which is nice sometimes.

Good luck!

I actually planned on doing that already! I like the idea of being able to turn it in while driving forward for hooking up trailers.

The only issue I see with the wire maybe being bare, is that I have my H/U set to only switch screen when it gets 12v power, not ground.

I appreciate the quick responses

I agree. My power is hooked up to reverse lights. I have nothing but issues. Works 75% of the time and has a 5 sec delay for power.

My truck did the exact same thing when I installed my camera today. Basically what is happening is there is just enough voltage (.2 volts in my case) when the brake is applied to make the HU think it is in reverse but not enough volts to actually turn on the camera. No matter what I did I couldn't figure out why there is a small amount of power in the circuit. What I ended up doing is installing a relay before I tied into the reverse so that the wire I tapped into had no power what so ever until it received full power (aka reverse), when it got power it turned on the relay which in turn activated the trigger wire. That's the only way I could make it work right. There has got to be an issue somewhere (bad relay or shorted wire) that would be causing there to be a small amount of voltage ran through the circuit that would cause the HU to think the truck is shifting into reverse. Hope that helps and makes sense.

Thanks man! That makes sense. I'll probably wire up a relay for it tonight. Weird how the reverse wire gets power with the brake though.
