Splicing reverse and brakelights just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Something shorts out, and you blow the fuse, and you have no brakelights. I'm sure you would know, by everyone behind you honking their horn and telling you that you are number one. ()
Just run power from inside the cab, with a fuse tap, or splice into something like the radio power. Wrap that wire and the video wire in wire loom, and send it to the back of the truck.

Who said anything about splicing brake and reverse wires?

My brake wires haven't been touched. Many of us have spliced into the reverse wires at the tail lights just for simplicity sake. A lot easier to run a wire from the camera to the taillight than it is to run from the camera to the cab.

I've been spliced into my reverse wire for 2 years now and havent had a single issue. Wrapped it with electrical tape to avoid shorting or water damage.

Ok.. so 09 F150. XLT no nav system. i have a license plate mount camera and a 4 in screen. The video cable has the thin red wires on both sides.

The screen has power wires off of it. The camera has power wires off of it. Can i 1. run one power wire, front to back, connect camera and screen and connect it to power in the cab?

2. Are the red wires on the video cable the reverse trigger? If so, what do i connect the one at the camera end to? If not, can i just leave them be?

3. If i can run connect camera and screen power together, can i put that end into the black w/ pink stripe under the kick plate for my sole power? i dont have any desire for it to be on when not in reverse.

When i look at my wiring, it makes sense. but then i think about it and i get confused. If anyone's got any input that would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Really need more details. Could you post the user manual or something so we can see what you're talking about? It's different when you're talking about a camera with it's own screen rather than using your head unit's screen which is what I think you're talking about.

I played with it last night, pretty simple actually. Connected camera to reverse light at the taillight. Ran a power wire and video cable to cab, connected both to screen. Grounded both and its that simple. I guess my monitor is one that is "video sensing" so no trigger wire was needed.

I did this install a few weeks ago. Very simple. Thinking about unplugging the plate lights and installing some plate light bolts instead. Not sure yet, but I do love the way it looks and how small it is. Took forever to get that little camera straight with the guidelines. Paid about $9 on eBay for this camera. Ended up running the reverse trigger wire to the backup/reverse light at the back of the truck. Couldn't find the wire under the parking brake. I was already running the RCA cable and it didn't make the install any more complicated. I also ran the wires out of the back of my cab through the vent behind the back seat.

It's the same style truck what would it matter if it was tried on your specific truck?

I believe the OP did this to an 04-08. The only thing that changes between models is possibly the color of the reverse trigger wire.
