Thank you mblouir for this walk-through. We finally had a warm enough day in Ohio so that I could detail my truck. I borrowed my cousin's orbital buffer then followed mblouir's guide and the difference is absolutely amazing. Aside from some dents and deeper scratches, the paint looks flawless! It brought back so much depth and sparkle that even my sister noticed that I had done something other than just wash it. I don't have a good before picture, but the after pictures speak for themselves. Oh, and I took the opportunity to put the 09-12 Fx4 decals on

The first picture is a before but it is cloudy and not a great reference...the rest of the pictures are the finished product.

Been really wanting to detail my own car for some time now, just wasn't sure how to do it properly. Awesome write up on how to do it. One question though, will the clay do any harm to the clear coat?

No it won't. Just keep folding the clay to keep it clean. You should be using enough lube (detail spray) so that the clay doesn't stick when you rub it over the car.

I've got some oxidization on my 01 Supercrew I bought about two months go. Wanted to go forward with detailing but wondering if the paint correction would help or simply magnify the problem.

I know the correct fix would be to re- paint, but I am not quite ready to pay for that yet. I have some mechanical and other issues to deal with while saving to re-shoot truck. However; I hate the idea of leaving the truck as it is now, it needs a good clean and detail.

So would the paint correction help and if so any ideas on the effects on the oxidization areas. They are two small spots in the front fenders, and one spot on the back of the hood by the cowl. Sorry for no pics but it is raining heavy right now.

The steps detailed in this post should work for the oxidation as well. The ultimate compound is great (in my opinion!) for removing the oxidized paint.

What would be a good way to get rid of those little surface rust speckles? I'm new to detailing and would like to start doing it myself.

Can I wax the black tape stripe on a FX4 with the appearance package? If I do get wax on it what will remove it? How should I take care of the stripe?
