Default What would you do - long trip/oil 5.0

Just curious what you all think.

My 2013 STX 5.0 has been in my possession since last August and it only has 3,300 miles on it. So the oil is from the factory of course and based on my knowledge from the internets and this forum it has the semi-synthetic.

I have the replacement oil and filter already but I am going on a 1,000 mile trip this weekend and am curious if I should change it? It has also never been on a long trip.

Let me know what you all think. I am leaning toward no as it has so low miles. But, I could be wrong.

Thanks.

I would go by what your owners manual says regarding oil changes. There are guys that change the initial oil earlier than required because they feel there are metal shavings in the oil from the break in.

I changed mine at 5K the first time and at 7500 after that. If I used the Oil Life Indicator, it would be at 10K and that may be too much for direct injection, assuming the 5.0 is direct injection.

That is why I am wondering cause of metal shavings and such low miles. But, it really only has 3300 miles so it isn't close to changing?!

The 5.0 is not direct injection from what I know.

What does the oil life indicator currently say? Has the oil ever been changed? In both my previous 2011 and current 2013 that I bought new, I had the original oil changed at about 3k miles just to be on the safe side.

Given your username, I would just change it

Given the mileage, and the expected trip, there is no reason to change it. Use the engine life indicator to tell you when to change it.

I've never had a new vehicle, but if I got one I'd change the oil after 500 miles to get the shavings out and then add full synthetic.

That being said, most people just do the first oil change at the recommended time and their vehicles are still running. I'm sure that includes my truck and the two I owned before it.

I've heard the "metal shavings" concern all my life and have always changed oil the 1st time early because I am cautious about those things, but isn't that what the filter and the magnet on the drain plug are supposed to catch? However, I just went on a long 2 week trip (3,800 mi) and changed mine early to have fresh new oil for the long highway speeds - like I say, I am cautious and don't want to be thinking "wish'ed I changed the oil..." halfway on the trip. I also still don't trust the indicators...

In your example, I'd probably take the trip, and change it when I got back.

LMAO - I didn't even know I have an "oil life indicator". I'll have to check.

Is it based on mileage or time? Mileage I would assume.

Yes.

It should be part of your display screen if you go through the menus under Information, System Check? Not in my truck so I am guessing.
