Default Wavering engine noise at highway speeds?

I have a 2012 F150 CrewCab Eco. with 5k miles on it, and over the last couple weeks have started to notice a wavering engine noise while I'm traveling at highway speeds. The best way to describe it is it sounds like the engine is sporadically accelerating and decelerating. The RPM gauge will show no change, I never lose any power, and me pressing or releasing the accelerator has little affect on the noise. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? Is this normal with the Eco?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is it only with the cruise control on?

Torque convertor might be going in and out of lock-up based on speed, load, terrain. A slight incline when going 50 mph or so can make that happen, just as an example.

It does it with and without the cruise on. The load or terrain seem to make no difference either. I hear the same noise when I'm pulling my utility tractor on a 17' trailer as I do with no load, and it is very flat terrain here.

Are both of your wheel disconnects working? The front differential could be what your hearing as it would be turning driven by wheel not xfer case.

How would I go about checking that?

Do you have a way to get front wheels off the ground? In 2wd with engine running (to be sure you have vacuum) in park if you spin front wheels by hand th cv axle shouldn't turn with it. If it does the actuator on the wheel bearing isn't working or you have a vacuum line off.

Thanks. I will check that this week and let you know what I find out.
